ELE Interview: Taking Five with Rosalind Atkinson – Her Dark Materials

This week we chat to the incredibly talented Rosalind Atkinson from Her Dark Materials. A photographer based in the Cotswolds and Oxford in the UK, Ros’ beautiful food imagery is deliciously lustworthy and has us stalking her Instagram daily, eagerly awaiting her to post a new image.

1. Where is your favourite travel destination?

Always Italy. I started learning Italian long before I’d ever been to the country, I just wanted to get as close to the culture as I could. I find that it’s just magical always. The food, the feeling of community and the lifestyle all appeal in equal measures, basically I think they’re all connected.

2. What is your favourite go-to recipe to cook at home?

I’ll often make a roast chicken just because I am craving for a batch of stock, which seems a bit of an effort, planning the leftovers before the meal, but we all love it so much that it seems like a good way. Rubbing the whole chicken with butter and salt, and then pushing tarragon under the skin is my favourite method.

3. What can’t you live without in the Garden?

I love fresh herbs. And in the summer, home grown tomatoes are the best!

4. What inspires you?

Good produce on a market stall, that inspires you to take it home and cook it, art galleries and my children.

5. Describe you perfect day

My favourite sort of day is quite often when I find something beautiful to photograph, like a bunch of artichokes or some prawns or a patch of wild garlic, and then spending far too much time arranging them and taking photographs. I can completely lose myself for hours, which is such fun. The other thing I like to do is just to cook for friends, I do enjoy making a fabulous feast!
