7 Ways You Can Revolutionize Your General Health

Everyone can do something to be healthier. This doesn’t mean you need to become obsessed with your health because, ironically, you may end up sliding on to the other end of the spectrum and becoming less healthy. But it does mean you can look into making a few changes to potentially live a healthier lifestyle.

This article explores a few good ways to be healthier. This doesn’t mean you have to do everything at once, because that might not be sustainable. But focus on a few things to start with, and you never know where the journey to a healthier lifestyle might take you.

Improve Your Fitness

    One fantastic way to improve your general health is to move more. We live in an increasingly sedentary world, where we drive everywhere, usually sit down all day to work, and then drive home and relax by sitting down and watching something. An overly sedentary lifestyle can lead to serious health problems, including cardiovascular issues and joint problems.

    Studies suggest that humans require regular exercise throughout the week. This translates to at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity as well as at least two sessions of strength training. While this sounds like a lot, it translates to about thirty minutes of exercise a day, although you can spread this around differently.

    Many people have gym days or exercise days, so they will do more intensive exercise twice a week or so, and then go on short walks or other activities for the rest of the week. Some chores can also work as exercise, especially if you end up working up a sweat or getting out of breath, so your activity doesn’t need to be tied to going to the gym or playing a sport.

    Find exercises that you enjoy and, if possible, work out with a friend. While having specific goals like losing weight or gaining muscle is good, you can also just work out for the sake of getting more fit.

    Change Your Diet

      As well as working out, your diet has a huge part to play in your general health. The saying “you are what you eat” isn’t perfect, but the basic fact that your body needs certain nutrients can’t be denied. 

      You need to consider how many calories you eat, as well as how you consume those calories, and whether you’re eating nutrient-dense foods. This is the best way to not only control your weight but also support your overall health and even your immune system.

      Try to have a varied diet, so you get the macronutrients your body needs, as well as other vitamins. Fresh fruit and vegetables often contain a lot of nutrients, and adding more to your diet is often an easy way to level up your diet.

      Cutting Out Bad Habits

        The things we take into our bodies can affect them for better or worse. While alcohol can be okay in small amounts, a lot of alcohol has a devastating impact on your body. It can cause weight gain, as well as increased cardiovascular risk, liver damage, and even brain damage.

        Try to stick to the recommended weekly amounts of alcohol as much as you can, and when you are drinking, always give yourself at least a day or two after drinking so your body can recover.

        Smoking also massively increases your risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as cancers and other health problems. While smoking is difficult to quit, it’s often much better for your health and can have real impacts on your ability to breathe and function. You might be surprised at what it’s doing to your body, especially if you’ve been smoking for a long time.

        You also need to think about foods with a high fat, sugar, and salt content. While these aren’t damaging in moderation, if they’re the bulk of your diet, they can lead to excessive weight gain, which can cause problems in itself.

        The Importance of Hydration

          So, we need to eat right and reduce the amount of toxins we take into our bodies. What else? 

          Water. It’s as simple as that. Humans need water more than food, but many people ignore their thirst because it’s inconvenient or they forget about it. If you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Chronic dehydration is far more common than people realize, with some studies suggesting that around 75% of adults in the US are dehydrated.

          This isn’t because water isn’t available; it’s because we just don’t drink enough. On average, people should drink at least 2 liters of fluid every day, or about 8 glasses. Of course, this can include other liquids like tea and coffee, but it’s a good idea to drink plain water as well.

          Your Mental Health

            As well as simply making you miserable, poor mental health can also make your physical health worse. Stress puts increased pressure on your heart, making you more likely to struggle with cardiovascular issues. Some mental health issues also make it so you’re less likely to look after yourself.

            Good self-care will help you manage your mental health, but if it comes to it, seek professional help.

            Getting Enough Sleep

              If you’re struggling to sleep, you might find that you have headaches, you’re more irritable, and you have reduced cognitive abilities. In the longterm, sleep deprivation can lead to health problems. 

              Try to create a sleep schedule that works, and if you need some extra help, consider drinking herbal teas or taking supplements before bedtime.

              Medical Intervention

                Finally, as well as improving your lifestyle, make sure to get regularly checked out by medical professionals. GPs and nurses can provide basic care and give you an overview of your health. You should also see a dentist regularly to get your teeth checked out, as dental health can also have a knock-on effect on how you feel overall. 

                If you need any extra help or support, make sure to see a doctor right away. This way, you can better maintain your good health.
