Sophistication, elegance, style and food so good it is worth the trip alone, Milan is a feast for the fashionable senses. The epicentre of design and fashion in Italy, this city of 1.4 million residents in Italy’s Lombardy region is not to be missed for anyone who has a love of art, fashion or food.
There are a number of sites to see including the famous Duomo, the impressively large cathedral which took two centuries to complete, and a viewing of Leonardo’s da Vinci famous masterpiece the Last Supper. But above all our favourite thing to do in this refined Italian city is to eat, shop and people watch.
The city is home to a number of Michelin starred restaurants and more surprisingly boasts some delicious street food. Our favourite dish on our most recent visit to Milan was simple baked crepes stuffed with courgette (picture below) enjoyed in the exquisite courtyard of Il Salumaio di Montepoleone. Other must-try dishes while you are visiting the city include Risotto alla Milanese (saffron risotto) and Ossobuco.
There are no shortage of beautiful high end hotels to stay at including the impressive Armani Hotel and Bulgari Hotel however if you are looking for something that is still classic, perfectly positioned in the fashionable Quadrilitero district but more moderately priced we love Hotel Mazoni. Elegant, refined and located on Via Montenapolene it is the perfect balance of boutique hotel without compromising on service or quality.
Be prepared for some seriously well heeled locals and a level of dress expectations in the city’s stylish bars and restaurants. If you are looking to splurge some serious dollars on high-end designer wares, the options are endless but a trip to the beautiful Gallerie Vittorio Emanuele II is a great place to start.
For a cultural night out the beautiful Teatro alla Scala is the perfect place to enjoy opera, ballet or a performance – just try to organise tickets in advance in order to not be disappointed.
We would recommend 2-3 days in Milan in order to enjoy the city and it also makes a great gateway to the beautiful Lakes region and one of our favourite Italian villages, Varenna . For more information visit Milan’s official tourism website here.
