Escape: Spectacular Views, Luxury Accommodation and a Stunning Location – Mt Hay Retreat, Berry Australia

If you are looking for a beautiful escape that combines the very best of rural life with city style luxury look no further than the stunning Mt Hay Retreat.

Located a few minutes from the pretty township of Berry Village on the famous South Coast of New South Wales, Mt Hay Retreat is a rural escape set on 360 acres of lush green farm land. The retreat has been lovingly designed to take advantage of it’s enviable location, natural attributes and the stunning views that extend all the way to the coastline.

Situatued just under two hours drive from Sydney, Mt Hay is perfectly located for a mid-week stay or a great spot to spend a little more time to fully explore all that the beautiful South Coast region has to offer.

As soon as you turn off the road and begin the climb up to Mt Hay it’s easy to start to relax, the country road winds up past horses and cattle grazing in lush paddocks and arrives at the retreat entrance where you are greeted by the friendly welcome from owners Anthony and Louise, and new family addition, puppy Dougal.

As the owners assist with your bags and lead you to the entrance of your suite it is a true gasp out loud moment when the door opens to reveal a spacious, luxurious suite with jaw-dropping views all the way down to the sea through floor to ceiling glass windows.

The design and interiors of the suites have been carefully thought out, providing you with everything you need for your stay. Comfy king-sized beds, huge bathrooms with rain showers and internal gardens, kitchenettes and large sofas perfect for relaxing are some of the suites features. Perhaps the most spectacular of all are the outdoors deck baths which have views for miles across the landscape to the ocean. There is nothing better than bathing under the stars with a glass of cool bubbly in hand.

It is the little touches in the suites that really stand out – sustainable water bottles, Malin & Goetz toiletries, reusable bags for use during your stay, robes, slippers, magazines, fresh fruit and coffee machines all contribute to making the visit memorable.

With only five king suites on the property you could almost be forgiven for thinking that you have the place all to yourself, the suites and landscaping have been cleverly designed for maximum peace and privacy.

It is worth dragging yourself away from your suite to further explore everything on offer at Mt Hay – a sky swing set atop a hill which swings up into the clouds, a giant chess set, peaceful dams with fish to feed and great walks and hikes up the mountain are some of the attractions. For true relaxation you can’t go past the 33 metre in-ground heated pool and spa, complete with waterfall, which is perfect to while away a few hours or swim some lazy laps.

Between the pool, the hikes and a yoga studio in the works a stay at Mt Hay can be as active as you want it to be. At the same time for those seeking a truly ‘do nothing’ holiday the location and grounds are the perfect spot to just relax.

Animal and nature lovers will be in their element with so many animals on the property including farm goats, cattle and chickens and native wildlife such as lyrebirds, echidnas, kookaburras and eagles.

Garden lovers will find the grounds at Mt Hay a true delight to explore, established citrus trees laden with fruit line pathways, flower arbours, established trees, a kitchen garden and native flowers and succulents are just some of the garden attractions. We visited in early winter and the property was beautifully green and lush, we can only imagine how spectacular it would be in springtime.

There is so much to do in the region – hundreds of kilometres of beaches to explore, world class wineries, golf courses and the spectacular Fitzroy Falls and Kangaroo Valley. There are pretty towns including Gerringong and Kiama close by and of course the beautiful Berry Village (another post coming on this lovely town soon!), which has a great range of cafes and restaurants and the famous Berry Donut Van (a must!) to enjoy during your stay.

Mt Hay is a family ran affair with the property being in the owner’s family for decades. The service is wonderful – unobtrusive, friendly, professional and helpful. Anthony and Louise are available for anything you require during your stay but will also leave you to enjoy the peace and quiet.

It’s rare to find a place quite as unique and special as Mt Hay, the combination of tranquility, nature and luxury really make it a truly special place to visit.
