How To Keep Your New Interests Going Post Lockdown

After being in lockdown for more than a month, it’s been impressive witnessing the creative ways people are spending their time. I have friends who have taken up baking, cooking, meditation, pilates and learning new languages!

The lockdown exit strategy and going back to normal life is, however, imminent and the conversations have become about returning to normal work conditions, which, for many includes long commutes.

The time back in our lives has opened up so much room for us to explore our passions and the question is how do we keep this much freedom and joyful experience in our lives post lockdown?

Here are three tips for making sure you maintain and keep up your new interests and pleasures in your daily life post lockdown.

1. Wake up earlier

I know what you’re thinking…I am not a morning person.

Neither was I, until I started forcing myself out of bed. Eventually I did it enough that it became normal for me and I even began to love it. I was a “get out of bed at the last moment possible” person but apparently even the worst and longest standing habits can be changed.

Getting up early and doing something productive is just about the most commonly taught hack to being more productive in your life. Every single personal development and high performing individual can proudly tell you what their morning routine is.

A morning routine sets you up for success because before the day has begun, you’re already kicking goals. Even if you get nothing else right during the day, you will have at least met your goals in the morning and this sends validating messages to your subconscious mind that you’re in control and capable of accomplishment.

Some great morning routines can include reading, meditating, exercising, journaling and doing whatever it is you think you have no time for.

2. Use your evenings productively

Most people come home from work, cook a meal, help the kids with their homework, do a few chores, put on the telly and then start getting ready for bed, ready to rinse and repeat.

However, a game changer came when I learnt that I could sneak a bit of work in the evening for something that I was working towards.

It’s easy to say I am too tired for anything else. That might even be true.

But learning to set aside time no matter how you feel is one of the best habits you want to build to be able to create amazing things in your life.

You can show up for a job that you might not even care that much about. Why wouldn’t you put in the time to something that’s important to you?

3. Get past the awkward stages to becoming pro

After the initial excitement wears off from any new venture, the next phase of any venture is the awkwardness before you can become masterful.

For example, when you start a new business. You can be very excited by the idea, build up the foundations, make it go live, but as the business grows, there is a gap between where you want to be and where you are. This is the in-between phase of being a novice and becoming a pro.

This gap can be an uncomfortable place to be as you will doubt yourself, compare yourself and feel like you’re not good enough.

This is where most people give up on their ventures, not realising that it is just a part of a creative cycle.

Persevere and do what is necessary to become better at what you do. At some point, you will have gained enough skills and confidence that it is your new normal and that’s when you can’t live without your new venture. That’s what you should be aiming for.

Stay safe and keep creating, all.
