Live: A Tropical Shopping Oasis and the World’s Largest Indoor Waterfall – Jewel at Changi Airport, Singapore

When it comes to airports, Singapore’s Changi Airport takes just about every award for the world’s best. For the last seven years it has remained untoppled on the Skytrax World Airports Award Best Aviation Hub list. From butterfly enclosures to day spas, there is so much to keep you entertained at Changi.

If you have to spend any time in transit this is the place to be, and with the opening of Jewel, the new multi-level retail and entertainment dome, a stopover can be more of a pleasure than a chore.

Jewel opened in April this year to much fanfare, at it’s heart is the world’s largest indoor waterfall, the Rain Vortex, which is surrounded by forest and gardens. It is visually stunning and a pleasure to explore particularly to enjoy the beautiful abubdant greenery (over 60,000 shrubs and 3,000 trees!) after a long haul flight.

There are canopy walks, parks, sky nets, slides and mazes to be enjoyed and a spectacular light and sound show that illuminates the waterfall (try to see it at night- it’s beautiful!). In addition to the Rain Vortex, there are over 280 retail stores, a vast array of restaurants and eateries, an in-mall hotel, Yotel, catering for travellers requiring a comfy bed, IMAX theatre and the Changi lounge, a pay-per-use airport lounge that has sleep pods and showers in addition to the standard lounge facilities.

Jewel connects with the airport terminals at Changi, however you don’t have to be travelling to enjoy the mall as it is located landside, meaning you don’t need to go through security or customs to enter.

There is luggage storage, early check-in facilities and bag drop meaning that for most airlines you can check bags through up to 12-24 hours before departure and enjoy the Jewel facilities without having to lug your suitcase and bags around.

If you have only a short time between flights and want to see the impressive Rain Vortex, you can view it from Terminal 1 without having to clear customs.

Changi has certainly upped the ante with the addition of the Jewel complex, making it hard to see how it will lose its World’s Best Airport Award anytime soon.
