It is difficult not to be enchanted by the beautiful Balearics Islands off the coast of Spain – warm sunshine, salty sea breezes from the Mediterranean and a relaxed lifestyle brings visitors from all over the world to the islands each year.
Wandering the streets and villages it was the beautiful white limestone buildings of Ibiza and Formentera that captivated our attention. Many of the stone buildings, often rustic and centuries old, are punctuated by a pop of colour in the brightest hues- greens, blues, yellows and reds reflecting the sky, sand and the sea. The simplicity of the structures, the outdoor patios and the tumbling bougainvillea are a heady combination that conjure up thoughts of lazy days sipping vino with a view of the sea.
So if you can drag yourself away from the beautiful beaches and cafes we highly recommend wandering the streets and laneways of the islands to appreciate the history and architecture.
ELE top tip- wear flat shoes! There are a lot of hills, steps and cobbled streets to navigate.
Having worked in construction (brick & stone masonry) for many years I love seeing this kind of architecture.
It is really beautiful, there were so many lovely old buildings, it would have been great to be able to get inside some of them.
