For art, history or garden lovers a trip to France would not be complete without a visit to the beautiful gardens and homestead of artist Claude Monet in Giverny.
The spectacular gardens, set across two acres in the French countryside, are where the Master of Impressionism painted some of his most famous works.
There is a stunning array of flowers, walkways, meandering waterways and the famous bridge and lily ponds that appears in a number of his paintings.
Giverny is approximately 45 minutes from Paris by train (station is Gare St Lazare), you will need to alight at Vernon and from here take the little train at the front of the station that transports you to Giverny via the scenic route, highlighting places of interest along the way.
Tickets to enter the garden (13 Euros for adults, concession and seniors available) can be purchased on the day at the entrance.
The little village of Giverny is beautiful itself (see our post on Giverny here) so we advise making sure you have at least an hour to wander around the town either before or after you visit the gardens.
We were surprised by the sheer variety of the plants and flowers in the gardens (particularly the stunning dahlias) and the peacefulness of this beautiful spot. The entry ticket also allows you to wander around Monet’s family home and see how the artist lived.
We recommend visiting during the shoulder season when the weather is still lovely and the flowers are in full bloom but the summer crowds have dispersed.

Absolutely stunning. I was there in the spring and saw it from a totally different vantage point. The tulips were in bloom and the roses were not running on the pathway. It was no more or less stunning. But, what a treat to see it in the fall. I can only imagine what it will look like when the leaves start changing in the late fall. Thank you so much for taking me back to my trip from a few months back. It is such a beautiful place.

You must visit during tulip season too. It is amazing. I could visit every month just to see how all of the flowers change. Wouldn’t that be wonderful!?
