New York’s New Floating River Pool

New York is set to get another major drawcard to the city with approval for an ambitious floating plus shaped pool project in East River given the go-ahead.

Back in 2010, four friends from design firm PlayLab and architecture firm Family, had the wild idea of creating a swimmable pool in New York’s East River. After a number of years raising funds and working with the city of New York, approval has been given by city planners for the project to proceed.

+ POOL will filter bacteria and contaminants (600,000 gallons a day) through layers of filtration materials and leave perfectly safe, clean and swimmable river water for New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy.

The project will include a lap pool and an area for children and will be located north of Manhattan Bridge.

While the project still has a few hurdles to get over and funding to secure, once it has commenced, New Yorkers can expect to be swimming in the plus shaped pool in about two years time. It will be yet another reason to visit one of the world’s most dynamic cities. To keep up to date with progress on the project visit here.
