Practical Ways to Improve Home Security This Year

Keeping a home secure doesn’t have to mean a full alarm system or a stack of new gadgets. A handful of straightforward habits, kept up consistently, do most of the work in making a property a less appealing target.

1. Start With the Basics

Before looking at anything more elaborate, it’s worth making sure the fundamentals are actually in place. Checking that every door and window locks properly, and replacing any latch or lock that’s stiff, damaged or simply old, closes off the most obvious ways in. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show police recorded burglary fell by 9% in the year to March 2026, a trend widely linked to the kind of everyday improvements in home security that most households have quietly made over the years. Getting into the habit of checking doors and windows before leaving the house, even for a short trip, costs nothing and takes seconds.

    2. Make the Outside of Your Home Safer

What’s happening outside a property matters just as much as what’s inside it. Research reported by Insurance Business UK, based on a survey of UK households for Tesco Insurance, found that break-ins often cluster around darker months and that timed or motion-sensitive lighting was one of the most commonly recommended deterrents by security experts. Keeping entrances well lit and trimming back hedges or shrubs that block a clear view of doors and windows makes a property feel more open and overlooked, exactly the opposite of what an opportunistic burglar is looking for. A tidy, visible garden also makes it far easier to notice anything that looks out of place.

      3. Pay Attention to Often-Overlooked Areas

Some parts of a property are easy to forget about simply because they’re not used every day. A garage is a good example: checking that the doors are in good repair and functioning properly is as important as the front door, and electric garage doors offer a convenient way of accessing the space without having to get out of the car in the dark. It’s also worth running an eye over sheds, side gates and any other entrance that doesn’t get much daily attention, since these are often the weakest link.

        4. Get Into Good Security Habits

A few simple routines can do a lot for peace of mind over the course of a year. Avoid leaving spare keys anywhere obvious, and consider asking a neighbour you trust to keep half an eye on the property whenever you’re away for more than a night or two. Taking a minute to check if the house is properly locked before bed, or before heading out, is a small habit that quickly becomes second nature.

None of this requires a big outlay. Solid basics, a well-lit and visible exterior, attention to the parts of the house that get overlooked, and a few consistent habits go a long way towards making a home feel genuinely secure.
