The Only Materials You Should Consider For Your Next Roof Renovation

If you’re considering renovating your roof, then one of the main things to think about is the roofing material that you’re going to use. The optimal choice would depend on the climate in your area, your budget, and the pitch of your roof, as well as your aesthetic preferences to a lesser degree. But which roofing materials are worth considering in 2026? We think the answers will surprise you.

Architectural asphalt shingles

The main choice for most roof renovations is architectural asphalt shingles. These are very common for residential roof renovations and are the main type of roofing material used on homes throughout the country. People like this option because it is highly affordable and shingles will last 20-30 years with proper maintenance. They can also be injected with additional bituminous substances that enable them to retain their flexibility even after many decades of exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Installation is relatively easy, and there is a wide range of colours and styles available for those who want to customise their homes. We suggest considering this option now because it’s eco-friendly.

Metal roofing

Metal roofing is a rising star among roofing materials right now, particularly for residential properties. More people than ever are becoming interested in this type of roof, whether made of steel, aluminium, or another material like copper.

Metal roofs tend to last between 40 and 70 years, and they are often considered to be the “last roof that people need”. They are also relatively cheap to install, costing only $8 to $16 per square foot. They’re very durable against fire, wind, hail, and extreme weather, and they can be made to be reflective, reducing energy costs for air conditioning by between 10 and 25%.

Synthetic roofing

If you want to minimize roof repairs, then synthetic roofing is another option. These last between 30 and 50 years and cost between $10 and $15 per sq ft. You can get different types of synthetic materials like synthetic shingles, synthetic tiles, and synthetic slate. The upside of these materials is that they are often lightweight and fire-resistant. Unlike real wood, they won’t burn. They are also a growing trend in 2020 as more homeowners look for affordable and sustainable options for their roofing.

Clay and concrete tiles

Another option is to go for clay and concrete tiles. These are a premium, but they’re very durable in hot, sunny climates like the Southwest in the US or the Mediterranean. Clay and concrete tiles will last 50 years or more with very minimal maintenance. It’s a good idea to remove moss and lichen every few years, but if you do this, the tiles will last for decades and you may never need to replace them. They also offer excellent thermal mass, which means that having tiles on your roof makes it easier to keep your home cool. You also get a classic, durable look, making your property feel more traditional and characterful.

So there you have it, some roof materials that we think are worth considering in 2026.
