  • Buzzing sounds or burning smells: Any strange sounds or odors coming from outlets, switches, or the breaker panel are serious warning signs that need immediate attention.
  • Warm or discolored outlets: An outlet or switch plate that feels warm to the touch suggests a wiring problem that could be a fire risk.

While you can definitely change a lightbulb, most electrical work is best left to the pros. Before scheduling a service call, it helps to know what homeowners should check before calling an electrician. For things inside your house, like putting in a new light fixture or replacing a bad outlet, a licensed residential electrician is the right person for the job. But some problems involve the connection between your home and the power grid itself, like a damaged service line or a faulty meter box. For these tasks, you’ll need a certified level 2 electrician who is allowed to work on the network infrastructure that connects to your property. If you see damage to the wires leading to your house or the hardware they’re attached to, don’t hesitate to call for specialized help.

Upgrading for Efficiency and Safety

If you live in an older home, your electrical system might not be ready for all the modern electronics and appliances we use today. An old panel with fuses instead of circuit breakers, not enough outlets, or two-pronged ungrounded outlets are all signs that it might be time for an upgrade. A professional can check out your home’s needs and suggest improvements. Common upgrades include replacing an old electrical panel to handle more power, adding dedicated circuits for high-power appliances like air conditioners, and installing Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets in kitchens and bathrooms to protect against shocks.
