Worthwhile Garden Upgrades to Consider

man and woman gardening

Everyone wants a perfect outdoor space, but most of us just end up staring at a soggy patch of grass every spring wondering where our money went that we spent at the garden centre last year. You see all these flawless magazine spreads and TikTok posts and start to think an expensive water feature will fix your life, but will probably be disappointed to find that it just attracts endless mosquitoes and clogs with dead leaves by October. Most of us are guilty of wasting our cash on things like flimsy solar lights that break after one bad rainstorm instead of things that genuinely matter. We buy cheap plastic items thinking it adds character when what we really need is basic functionality. Let’s look at what is actually worth your hard-earned cash.

Paving and paths

A solid stone path or a decently laid patio completely changes how you actually use the garden because you’re not just waiting for the two weeks of summer when the grass is finally dry enough to walk on.  Laying proper slabs means you can actually drag the heavy wheelie bins out to the street without slipping on a mossy death trap and ruining your morning.

An Outdoor Tap That Doesn’t Leak

This sounds incredibly boring but it’s probably the absolute best money you’ll ever spend on your house. People spend hundreds of pounds on fancy exotic plants and then let them all die because they cant be bothered to fill a plastic watering can in the kitchen sink fourteen times a night. Pair that with a wall mounted hose reel that actually retracts properly, instead of leaving a tangled green trip hazard across the lawn to irritate every single day in the summer!

Shade

A decent place to shade yourself from the sun (and the rain at times!) in the summer is a worthwhile investment. It could be awnings, or a big parasol over your garden table. That way when you have friends over for barbeques and things everyone wont be sweltering looking for shade.

Heavy Duty Storage

Buying the cheapest thin wooden shed you can find from a giant DIY store guarantees you’ll be replacing rotten floorboards in three years, while your expensive lawnmower slowly rusts. Spend the extra money on a heavy-duty metal or thick resin shed that actually keeps the damp out permanently. Youve got to protect your tools and garden furniture or you’re just throwing your money away twice.

Established Plants

Waiting for tiny little twigs to grow into a tall privacy screen can take literally years. If you want to block out the nosy neighbours staring at you while you drink your coffee in your dressing gown right now then you need to buy mature plants. They are expensive up front but buying a thick six foot hedge straight away buys you five years of your life back and gives you instant privacy! Put your money into the boring structural things first and the rest of the garden will look after itself because you don’t want to waste time on the trendy stuff until you fix the foundations.
