Your Ultimate Guide To Safe Sun Tanning This Summer, With Brunae Body

Want to get that beautiful glow this summer whilst being a conscious sun-seeker? We spoke to Brunae Body for their safe tanning tips to help you get that gorgeous glow.

Summer is almost here! With the sundress and swimmers season almost upon us, the words ‘summer body ready’ are being thrown around quite a bit. With the ultimate summer body necessity being a great tan, it’s important to be sun smart, especially during Australia’s intense summers. Whilst faking a tan is a great option, many prefer a little bit of sunbaking.

It’s important to note that the sun is not all harmful. In fact, as human beings, we rely quite heavily on it! Direct sunlight increases our serotonin levels, thus reducing feelings of stress and anxiety (could this be why everybody loves the summer season?). Our bodies also need a healthy dose of Vitamin D to function. Whilst Vitamin D supplements are widely available, direct sunlight is the best source. Basking in the sunlight for 10 to 15 minutes can boost the health of our bones, joints, skin, hair, nails, and immune systems.

Prolonged exposure to the sun, however, can cause serious damage, including premature ageing, sunburn, and skin cancer. While it’s safer than solariums, sunbathing is not entirely risk-free, but it can be done safely by properly preparing and protecting your skin. We worked with Brunae Body to provide the ultimate guide to safe and fast sun tanning this summer.

Pre-Tanning

Understand the UV index and your skin type.

Taking the time to familiarise yourself with your skin type and UV index is important not just for the summer, but for any other season because UV rays can penetrate clouds. The UV index measures how intense the sun is. The higher the index, the higher the ultraviolet radiation.

UV is categorised as UVA and UVB. UVA is what causes symptoms of ageing, such as wrinkles and spots. UVB is generally responsible for tanning, burning, and redness. Both types can increase the risk of skin cancer, so you need to choose sunscreens that will protect you from both.

Generally, the UV index is highest between 12 and 2 pm, so those looking to sun tan should potentially avoid these hours. We’ve found the majority of people tan between 11.30 and 4 pm, believing the stronger the sun, the better the tan. Although intense UV helps you tan faster, it is also dangerous if not managed adequately.

The rate of tanning must be based on your skin type. See Fitzpatrick’s skin chart below to better understand what type of skin you have. Once you have identified your skin type, you will have a better indication of how quickly you may tan or burn.

Apply Brunae Body’s Accelerating Tanning Lotion 3-5 days before any sun exposure

As you may have noticed from the chart shown above, the amount of melanin your skin has determines how fast and dark you tan. Generally, those with higher levels tan faster and burn less than those with lower levels of melanin.

Brunae Body worked with some of the leading experts in the tanning industry to develop a daily moisturising lotion that helps supercharge the melanin levels in your skin before you tan! Brunae recommends that you use this lotion around 3 days before sun exposure.

Again, increasing your melanin levels is important as this will help you to tan faster and deeper! So why not use a moisturiser that does this?

Pre-Tan Tip: Exfoliate your skin the day before you start applying the Accelerating Tanning Lotion. This will remove any dead skin cells, and help your skin absorb the lotion a lot better.

Tanning Time

Apply Brunae Body’s Tanning Oil and your choice of sunscreen

Now that you have followed the Pre-Tanning steps above and your skin is charged with melanin from the Accelerating Pre-Lotion, you are now ready to tan! Many people believe sunscreen prevents tanning, but Brunae Body developed the Tanning Oil to work in conjunction with any SPF application.

Their Tanning Oil is enriched with Brunae Body’s 100% natural active complex specifically formulated to help boost the melanin levels in your skin. They have also tested their product on a wide range of skin types. “Some of our babes have even reported results in as little as 20 minutes! Simply apply your desired amount of Tanning Oil before or after sunscreen”.

Stay hydrated and sun-protected, and re-apply when necessary.

Whether kicking back to your summer playlist, playing some beach volleyball or simply sitting and chilling, being in the sun for any amount of time can make us overheat and become dehydrated.

So, whether your tanning session lasts 10 or 30 minutes, make sure you are drinking enough water. Always remember to take breaks from being exposed to direct sunlight by seeking some shade and keep refilling your water bottle.

Water bottle hack: Get a water bottle that is insulated, the water will stay cold for longer, even on warmer days.

The key to safe sun tanning is being sun smart! As well as wearing a hat and sunnies, it is also important to remember what time you last applied SPF! Your sunscreen will tell you how many hours before you need to reapply, and if you’ve had a dip in the water, make sure you reapply immediately! The Brunae Body Tanning Oil is water resistant for a couple of hours, but it is still recommended you reapply it every time you refresh your sunscreen.

After Care

Prolong that gorgeous glow!

Now that you’ve finished your tanning sesh, it’s time to wash off. If you’re brave, we recommend cold showers because they work wonders for your skin and overall health. After you’ve rinsed off, hydrate and moisturise your skin. Keeping the skin hydrated will help to lock in and prolong your tan!

You can also use Brunae’s Accelerating Tanning Lotion, to help rehydrate your skin. This product is truly incredible and acts as a multipurpose lotion. It’s packed with amazing ingredients which help your skin stay hydrated while helping to keep those melanin levels activated.

Repeat the process as necessary

Safe sun tanning is all about reducing the amount of time you spend in direct sunlight. We recommend giving yourself a few days before you have another sun-baking session. If you really can’t resist or want to deepen your tan, try to go during the times the UV index isn’t as high or plan frequent, but shorter, sun tanning sessions to ensure your skin gets the breaks it needs and always wear a SPF.
