Choosing Stud Earrings for a Short Break

One Pair of Studs, From Coffee to Dinner

The clothes are folded, the shoes have made it into the bag, and then the jewellery box opens. Suddenly there are six pairs of earrings in contention for a three-night trip. It’s a small packing problem, but an easy one to create.

Start with a pair you’d happily wear with the outfit you’re travelling in and the clothes you’ve set aside for dinner. Studs can do both jobs. Think about the afternoon you’ll spend wearing them as well as how they look when you first put them on.

Look at the side as well as the front

Check which measurement you’re reading. A stone’s diameter describes the gem; the finished earring may extend beyond it. From the side, look at both the setting and the back. Those parts are easy to miss in a photograph of two sparkling circles.

Among Lily Arkwright’s moissanite stud settings, Sena pairs round stones with four claws and friction backs in its 18ct white-gold version. Its 5mm option means 5mm across each stone. Check which size the photograph or video shows; it may differ from the option you have selected. Ask for a side view and the setting’s height as well before deciding.

Check whether the carat figure refers to one stone or the pair, and whether it represents actual weight or a diamond-equivalent size. GIA distinguishes moissanite from diamond: they are different materials. The description should make clear which gemstone you’re choosing.

Keep the earrings, change the mood

For a mild-weather city break, try a white cotton shirt with navy wide-leg trousers and comfortable flat shoes. Small round studs add a bright detail beside the open collar. Leave the shirt relaxed and take the bag you can comfortably carry through a market or museum.

For dinner, keep the same trousers and earrings, then swap the shirt for a satin camisole and add a light jacket. The smooth fabric gives the outfit a different feel without requiring another set of jewellery. If you’d rather keep your arms covered, wear the shirt open over the camisole instead.

If that isn’t your wardrobe, do the same exercise with two outfits you actually plan to pack. Put on the earrings with both before you go. You may find that the pair you’ve had for years works beautifully with a dress you usually save for dinner.

The same thinking runs through packing a capsule wardrobe: each piece should work with several outfits. A familiar pair can be just as useful beside a breakfast coffee as at the restaurant you’ve booked for your last night.

Give them a normal day first

The pair you already reach for on an ordinary morning deserves a place on the shortlist. You know how the backs feel and whether the earrings bother you after a few hours. A trip is a good time to enjoy that familiarity.

If you’re considering a new pair, check the retailer’s try-on and return terms before ordering, and leave time to assess them before departure. Where trying them is permitted, wear them with your glasses and the collar or scarf you expect to take. Notice whether you keep touching or adjusting them.

Think about the journey too. If studs press when you rest against a neck pillow, put them away before settling down for the flight. You can put them on again when you arrive. Choosing one pair for several outfits doesn’t mean keeping them in continuously.

Give them a place when they’re off

A small, closed jewellery case is worth making room for. Use a separate soft-lined section for the earrings, with somewhere to keep both backs. The National Association of Jewellers recommends separate storage so pieces don’t rub or scratch one another.

Its care advice also recommends taking jewellery off for bed, keeping it away from chlorine, and applying lotions or perfume before putting it on. Plan to put the studs safely away before a swim or spa visit, and ask about care for their particular stones and metal.

Back in the room, return them to the same case rather than balancing them on the bathroom shelf. Having a place for them makes getting ready simpler, too: the earrings are there, the dinner outfit is ready, and you can spend the remaining ten minutes deciding what you feel like eating.
