How to Get the Coastal Grandmother Style

TikTok is responsible for many ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ trends and this week has been no exception with the ‘Coastal Grandmother’ look going viral. The style isn’t new, wealthy seaside dwellers have been making it their own for decades, and it was popularised by Diane Keaton’s character, Erica Barry, in the 2003 romcom classic ‘Something’s Gotta Give‘.

Many of us lusted after her seaside home in the movie, with her Hampton’s style becoming a deeply ingrained interior look that is still relevant today. However the Coastal Grandmother fashion trend is what has been taking over the internet in recent weeks and we expect it won’t go away anytime soon.

What is the Coastal Grandmother Style?

The Coastal Grandmother look is all about laidback natural fabrics and styles – think white and neutral linen pants, loose-fitting button up shirts, chunky wool knits and bucket hats.

It extends to more than just fashion, with homes and interiors also getting the cream linen treatment and the overall lifestyle being one of early nights, shopping at farmer’s markets for organic produce, fresh flowers from the garden, blue and white ginger jars and a low-tech, relaxed existence.

Celebrities and the Coastal Grandmother Trend

Celebs have been getting on board with the trend, with everyone from Anne Hathaway to Selena Gomez sporting the look, with Anna claiming that she has been ready for the Coastal Grandmother look ‘since before TikTok was born’.

How to Get the Look

Its fairly simple achieving the fashion look, choose natural fabrics like linen, wool and silk and go for a palette of cream, white, beige and neutrals. Linen stripes in soft blue or classic white and navy are part of the look and accessorise with bucket or straw hats and minimal jewellery and makeup.
