Endless sunshine, a thriving food and arts scene and year-around surf and sunsets, Queensland’s Gold Coast has become one of the hippest spots to live in Australia. We catch up with Emilia Sutton, founder of mimmi terra and find out what she loves about her town.
1. Tell us about the area that you live in and why you chose to make it your home.
I grew up on the Gold Coast and am still in awe of its pristine beaches and turquoise seas. The region boasts a wonderfully relaxed lifestyle, and what’s not to love about having summer all year round?
2. Where are your favourite places to eat and shop?
My absolute go-to shopping destination is the Pacific Fair. What sets it apart is its abundance of outdoor spaces, allowing you to relish the beautiful weather and bask in the sun while indulging in retail therapy. Another personal favourite is James St. in Burleigh, conveniently situated near the beach. It’s the perfect spot for me to explore local stores and discover unique designs following a dip in the ocean.
My favourite spots to eat for Italian food are Cantina in Mermaid Beach and Gemellini in Nobbys Beach. Bonita Bonita in Mermaid Beach is great for Mexican food and for Japanese I go to Etsu.
3. How would you spend a perfect day in your town/city?
Meeting a friend for a brunch at Bam Bam Bakehouse, before returning to the beach for a few blissful hours. As the day progresses, I find myself drawn to Burleigh Hill, where I enjoy an afternoon picnic accompanied by a drink, just in time for sunset, sublime.
4. What is your favourite thing about your town/city?
I love that we are lucky to have rainforest, farmland, and beaches to explore.
5. Any other local insider secrets we should know about?
It’s a favourite ritual of mine to bathe in the rock pools under the rainforest canapes and indulge in beautiful feel-good food! So be sure to add Currumbin rock pools followed by lunch at Pasture and Co. This charming cafe prides itself on using exclusively fresh, local, organic, and sustainably sourced ingredients.
