3 Days in Rome – The Best Rome Itinerary

With our three-day itinerary you can see some of the city’s most iconic sites, including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, and the Vatican and learn about the history of the city since it was founded in 753 BC to its current status as one of the world’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities.

Of course, Rome is not just about history and sightseeing. It’s also a city that loves to eat, and we’ll take you on a culinary journey through its many traditional dishes, from classic pasta dishes to authentic pizza and gelato. Plus the coffee! You have to try it.

Day 1

Morning – Grab an espresso at one of the local bars and drink t standing up as the Romans do, then start your day at the Colosseum, one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks. Be sure to book your tickets in advance to avoid the long lines. You can opt for a guided tour or explore the site on your own. From there, walk to the nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, which are included in the same admission ticket. These areas offer a glimpse into Rome’s ancient past.

Afternoon – Head to the Pantheon, a magnificent ancient temple dedicated to all the gods of Rome. Enjoy the lively atmosphere of Piazza della Rotonda, the square in front of the Pantheon, which is lined with cafes and gelaterias. From there, walk to the nearby Piazza Navona, a stunning Baroque square featuring three fountains and a beautiful church.

Evening – End your day with a stroll through the charming Trastevere neighborhood, known for its narrow streets, lively nightlife, and excellent restaurants. Have dinner at a traditional trattoria and enjoy some Roman specialties such as Carbonara, Cacio e Pepe, or Saltimbocca alla Romana. Honestly the food in Rome really is spectacular, on a recent visit we stumbled across a little restaurant that served the most exquisite walnut pasta – one of our foodie highlights!

Day 2

Morning – Visit Vatican City, the smallest independent state in the world and the home of the Roman Catholic Church. Start with a guided tour of the Vatican Museums, which house an impressive collection of art and artifacts from ancient Egypt to the Renaissance. Don’t miss the stunning Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo’s masterpiece. After the tour, head to St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world, and admire its stunning architecture and artworks.

Afternoon– Walk to the nearby Castel Sant’Angelo, a fortress built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The castle has served many purposes over the centuries, including as a papal residence and a prison. From there, cross the Tiber River and explore the trendy Prati neighborhood, which is full of designer boutiques, cafes, and wine bars. (ele Tip – there is nothing lovelier than sitting in a cafe in Prati with a glass of wine watching the world go by.).

Evening – Head to Campo de’ Fiori, a lively square in the heart of Rome, and have dinner at one of the many trattorias or pizzerias. Don’t miss the chance to try some of Rome’s famous street food, such as Suppli (deep-fried rice balls) or Pizza al Taglio (Roman-style pizza sold by the slice). After dinner, enjoy a cocktail at one of the many bars in the area.

Day 3:

Morning – Visit the beautiful Villa Borghese, a park in the heart of Rome that features several museums, art galleries, and a beautiful lake. Start with a guided tour of the Borghese Gallery, which houses an incredible collection of paintings and sculptures from the Baroque era. After the tour, rent a rowboat and paddle around the lake, or simply relax on one of the many benches and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Afternoon – Explore the historic center of Rome, starting with the Spanish Steps, a stunning staircase that leads to the Trinita dei Monti church. From there, walk to the nearby Trevi Fountain, a Baroque masterpiece featuring a mythological scene of Neptune, god of the sea. Toss a coin over your shoulder into the fountain to ensure your return to Rome.

Evening – End your day with a dinner in the Monti neighborhood, a charming area known for its narrow streets, trendy boutiques, and cozy trattorias. Try some of the local specialties, such as Bucatini all’amatriciana or Carciofi alla Romana, and enjoy a glass of wine from the nearby Frascat.

Where to stay in Rome

  1. Centro Storico – This is the historic center of Rome, where many of the city’s major landmarks are located. Staying here will allow you to easily explore the city on foot, and there are many options for hotels, apartments, and guesthouses.
  2. Trastevere – This charming neighborhood on the west bank of the Tiber River is known for its narrow streets, lively nightlife, and excellent restaurants. Staying here will give you a taste of authentic Roman life.
  3. Monti – This is another trendy neighborhood in the historic center of Rome, known for its boutique shops and cozy trattorias. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a quieter stay but still want to be close to the action.
