Elon Musk isn’t one of the world’s richest men without reason, his Tesla vehicles have been the go-to for EV fans for the last few years and with their sleek design, futuristic interiors and exceptional performance there is a reason why we see so many of them on the road.

Cost

$63k (AUD) Standard range RWD or $92k (AUD) long range/performance AWD

Range

491km standard range or 614km long range

Pros

Build Quality, comfort, range, performance (even in the standard model), charging stations network is unparalled.

Cons

On the expensive end, tight rear headroom, firm ride, those wheel trims.

Why we love it

The Tesla charging network second to none, the vehicle is highly customisable coupled with a performance that’s addictively instant.

Would we buy one?

Yes, the entry model is quick enough and with a fantastic range it is our choice.

2. MG ZS MY2021

Budget conscious buyers looking to enter the market would do well to set their sights the MG ZS, with its wallet friendly price, good standard equipment and sprightly drive, this is a great option for newcomers to the EV market.

Cost

$$ – $43k (AUD)

Range

263km

Pros

Value, actually quite sprightly, well specced.

Cons

Maybe not quite as cool as a Tesla, a limited distance per charge range by comparison, along with a firm ride on unsettled roads.

Why we love it

Cost alone is tempting and it is a breeze to drive in the city.

Would we buy one?

Yes and no, yes because its value for money but there is a 2022 model incoming that improves on everything from range to looks but this will mean the 2021 model with have some significant dealer discounts as the newer model is introduced.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is all about its looks, the futuristic styling with an almost boxy boy racer feel, it is going to impress anyone who wants to stand out on the road. Its charging is also lightning fast.

Cost

$$$ – $71990

Range

430km

Pros

Retro ‘Lancia’ look is stunning, Ultra rapid charging (5 mins = 100km!) Quality spacious cabin.

Cons

Pricey, sometimes ride is a little unsettling, no rear wiper.

Why we love it

Those looks! Interior design and the fact that Carsales made it car of the year 2021.

Would we buy it?

On looks alone yes (we know this isn’t the only reason to buy a car, buy hey it has to look good!) but in all honesty we couldn’t recommend over the Tesla 3 for a similar price. However if you want to stand apart from the EV crowd this is a great option.
