5 Statement Bags To Invest In Now

By Shannon Meddings, Style Machine

We interviewed Founder and Managing Director of Cosette.com.au, Pierre Paoli and found out his top 5 investment bag choices and why he loves them.

Where did your love of retailing bags and accessories come from?

French people have this reputation of always being well dressed. I think this cliché reputation is a result of our attention to details. An outfit is not complete if you don’t have the right combination of bags and accessories to style it to perfection. That’s the details that make all the difference and I think people are realizing this more and more.

Would you invest in a tan, black or fun designer bag to begin as a luxury investment piece?

Personally, I would definitely invest in a handbag from Celine as a first purchase. It keeps its value overtime and are timeless pieces. But I don’t think there is a right or a wrong answer to that question. If you are more conservative, going for a staple with a neutral colour will be the safest option and probably the most suitable. However, there’s so many ways you can enhance your style and if you’re not afraid of making a statement, Balenciaga has some amazing street style designs that are quite unique and extremely fashionable.

What are some of the things you should consider with the different styles and are there any trends that are popular in bags at the moment from Cosette?

We have such a high turnover in our product range as they’re all in high demand due to popularity, so it really depends on the season. A few years ago, people were after the Givenchy Antigona bag and we had purchased every single day but today, they’re more after Gucci. At Cosette we have bags suiting everybody’s style.

We keep expanding our range so we can offer a wide variety of products, but we understand that buying a designer bag is a serious purchase. That being said, clients should consider if they are after something casual, an evening bag or simply a work or a travel bag or if they just want a bag that does it all -and yes, it exists!

What do you believe it means to own a designer bag?

Owning a designer bag does not only make you more stylish, it shows how you choose to display your personality to the world and how you decided to express yourself. Brands have this way of revealing your personality. It’s not a coincidence if you choose Prada over Chloe or vice versa: it just shows who you are.

It’s also a statement through history as most designer brands have been around for many decades and it’s the way they reinvent their classic, twisting them with the current climate to modernise it.

What are your top 5 styles at Cosette and why?

1. Prada Re-Edition 2005 Nylon Bag

Prada has always been one of the first brand names that comes to mind whenever we think about luxury brands. Prada has created throughout the years many bags now turned iconic. It’s not without a surprise that the Prada Re-Edition from their famous 2005 release is a bag that just gets better throughout the years. A simplistic style with the Nylon signature, this bag looks as good with a casual activewear look than with a more elaborated one…it just adds a little something!

2. Givenchy Antigona

An all time best seller, the Givenchy Antigona is the bag that can do it all. Bulky shape with either shiny or grained leather to choose from, it is recognizable by literally everyone. It is great as a work bag since it seems to fit absolutely anything, it looks equally nice paired with some nice heels and that little black dress.

3. Saint Laurent Lou camera bag:

Saint Laurent bags have the ability to elevate any style. Cross body or over the shoulder, there are many ways you can play with them while looking completely Parisian. The Lou camera bag is a timeless design: casual since the long strap is in leather, but not quite, since the bag’s quilted details have this je ne sais quoi, adding all the luxury to it. With a lower price point than most bags, it certainly will make everyone look stylish now and in 10 years time.

4. Stella McCartney Falabella

Making sustainability and non-leather sexy again, Stella McCartney’s Falabella bag is one of the MUST-HAVES. The iconic and super soft leather-free fabric mixed with a chunky chain is the brand’s signature style. Seen on many influencers, celebrities and regular fashion-lovers throughout the seasons, this bag will keep you all in style, while keeping you eco-friendly as well.

5. Gucci GG Marmont

Since Alessandro Michele was appointed as Gucci’s creative director, the brand took a turn – for the best. It’s hardly imaginable to think about Gucci and not think about their GG’s signature hardware. The flap bag that can be worn many ways: from double strap to cross-body, or as a handbag, it is the luxury bag that every wardrobe needs.
