Vitamin C has quickly become the attractive younger sister to Vitamin A. An exceptional ability to minimise fine lines and wrinkles, while brightening and evening skin tone, Vitamin C is now a must in any skincare routine.

The Medik8 C-Tetra Intense Vitamin C Serum is one of the more expensive Vitamin Cs on the market, can it hold up against cheaper alternatives?

When reviewing the options on offer Vitamin C products can extend from $13-$200, leaving people unsure whether or not a high priced Vitamin-C means higher quality and better results.

Naturally, I put my skin and my wallet on the line with the Medik8 C-Tetra Intense Vitamin C serum. At a scandalous $140AUD it is definitely on the pricier end of the spectrum, and well above the $30-50AUD I would usually spend on a Vitamin C.

Vitamin C is arguably one of the more expensive actives on the market. Found exclusively in opaque packaging to protect it from oxidising, Vitamin C requires other ingredients to stabilise it and comes in a range of strengths from 5% to around 30%.

Though the C-Tetra Intense serum is at the higher end of that spectrum, not all high-strength Vitamin-Cs are created equal. Similarly potent, The Ordinary’s Vitamin C at 23% was irritating to my skin and left me with stinging every morning. The C-Tetra Intense contains both Vitamin F and Squalane to help hydrate and protect the skins natural moisture barrier.

The other point of difference for the C-Tetra Intense is how long the bottle lasts. Though it’s at the pricey end of the spectrum the four drops you use each day means this bottle will last months and months. The formulation work that Medik8 have done to stabilise the Vitamin C also ensures that it won’t oxidise over this time.

For me, Vitamin C plays a role in reducing and preventing hyper-pigmentation, and the Medik8 C-Tetra Intense Serum has by far been the most effective Vitamin C for this. Melasma underneath my eyes was significantly lighter after just a couple of weeks of daily use. Even through an Australian summer, my pigmentation didn’t get any darker or larger – a miracle in and of itself!

Overall the Medik8 C-Tetra Intense Serum has become one of just a couple of holy grail items in my skincare routine, and frankly only one of two products I would spend over $100AUD to purchase.
