4 Foods to Avoid During Invisalign Treatment

Are you starting your Invisalign treatment and aren’t sure what foods you can and can’t eat? You aren’t alone! We are frequently asked about the foods that you should avoid, especially for those new to Invisalign. While there is guidance online, most of it is contradictory and confusing, leaving you unsure where to turn or who to trust. Luckily for you, we are here to help with a comprehensive list of the foods to avoid during Invisalign treatment to prevent any damage to your new smile.

1.   Alcoholic Drinks

You should only consume alcoholic drinks in moderation when you have Invisalign, as some drinks, like red wine, can stain your aligners. Carbonated drinks can also cause damage, as they contain a lot of sugar. This can make your aligners stick and uncomfortable to wear. You will need to watch the acidity levels in alcoholic drinks too, as these can erode your tooth enamel, causing tooth decay.

When wearing your aligners, limit how many drinks you consume and switch to acidic or uncoloured alcoholic beverages.

2.   Crunchy Foods

Crunchy and hard foods, like raw carrots, nuts, and hard-shelled bread, can be enjoyed, but you need to take care while eating them. Hard and crunchy foods can chip or break your aligners, leaving you with the cost of replacement to ensure your treatment can continue. Crunchy food should be enjoyed in moderation to prevent this. You can also switch to cooked vegetables, fruits, and softer bread to reduce the risk of damaging your aligners, so you can enjoy your favourite foods without worrying about breaking them.

3.   Tea and Coffee

Tea and coffee can stain your teeth and discolour your clear aligners. Drinking tea and coffee while wearing your aligners can turn them yellow, making your teeth appear more yellow than they are. The heat from hot drinks while wearing your aligners can also warp the plastic, causing your aligners to not fit you properly. When this happens, you will need to pay for replacement aligners, which increases the cost of your treatment and the treatment time as you wait for them.

4.   Sticky Foods

Sticky foods should be avoided while wearing your aligners, as they can stick to your aligners or get stuck between your teeth. This can contribute to a buildup of plaque, bacteria, and tartar, impacting your oral health and the Invisalign process. You should switch from sticky sweets to soft cookies or cakes to satisfy your sweet tooth without risking damage to your teeth or aligners.

Tips for Eating and Drinking During Invisalign Treatment

Your Invisalign aligners need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day, and you need to know how to eat and drink while wearing them. To help you, we have included our top tips to use during your treatment:

Stick to Your Usual Diet

During your treatment, you should stick to your usual diet. You will want to limit your sticky or hard foods, but you can enjoy your usual diet, especially if you remove your aligners before eating.

Brush Your Teeth After Eating

Every time you have finished eating, you should brush your teeth. Not only does this help to maintain good oral health, but it also removes any small food particles from between your teeth and gums. Food particles are usually removed by brushing your teeth or by saliva, but this does not happen when your aligners are in. Any particles will be trapped, allowing bacteria to grow, so you need to ensure you brush after every meal or snack.

Drink Water

While your aligners are in, try to drink only cold or room-temperature water. Hot water can melt or warp your aligners, so you should avoid it. Water will not stain your aligners, and should be the only liquid you consume while wearing them. If you are going to drink sparkling water or soft drinks, we recommend removing your aligners first.

Remove Aligners While Eating

You should always remove your aligners before eating, protecting them from any damage and allowing you to eat as normal. Your aligners should be stored in their case when you aren’t wearing them, preventing them from getting damaged or lost.

Clean Your Aligners

Your aligners need to be cleaned regularly, too, preventing the buildup of harmful bacteria. Your dentist will provide guidance on cleaning your teeth, but you can use a soft toothbrush and water to clean the aligners gently. You can also soak them in a denture cleaning or aligner cleaning kit to ensure they are clean before you wear them again.

Attend Regular Dental Appointments

Throughout your Invisalign treatment, you should attend regular dental appointments to maintain your oral health and ensure it is progressing as expected. Regular appointments also allow you to have your teeth professionally cleaned and any work carried out.
