Embarking on a road trip with your family can be an exciting journey filled with scenic vistas and bonding moments. However, keeping young passengers engaged and content during long drives can sometimes be a challenge. Sara Leman, a literacy expert from Reading Eggs, offers a brilliant solution with fun, educational car games designed to enhance your child’s reading and phonetic skills while on the move.

In her innovative approach, Sara integrates classic games with a twist, focusing on phonics, vocabulary building, and listening skills—all through playful interaction. From the traditional “I Spy” to more structured challenges like “Sound Bingo,” each game is crafted to keep children entertained and learning, transforming tedious car rides into interactive learning adventures.

These games not only pass the time but also foster crucial language skills, encouraging children to explore sounds, words, and meanings in an engaging setting. So, buckle up and prepare for an educational ride where learning meets play, ensuring your road trip is as enriching as it is enjoyable.

1. Play I Spy

When it comes to helping your child master phonics (i.e., developing an ear for sound), the classic game “I Spy” is perfect for those long car rides. It’s simple, fun and a winner for passing time. Take turns giving clues about an object you’ve spotted, like, “I spy with my little eyes, something beginning with mmm.” Whether you are cruising through a lush rainforest or along a scenic coastline, this game fits any road trip.

2. The Sound of Bingo Car Game

Strong listening skills are important for reading, too! Turn your road trip into a scavenger hunt by creating a list of sounds you might hear along the way. This could be trucks, motorbikes, laughter, wind, or specific instruments in songs on the radio. When your child hears one of these sounds, they can excitedly call out ‘Bingo!’ For older children, consider turning up the challenge a notch by using sounds within certain words.

3. Find a Word That Starts With The Letter..

Word games are an excellent way to help your child think about how words are put together and while boosting their awareness of letters and sounds.

To kick things off, start off by searching for words that begin with a particular letter, such as “B.” Spend some time searching for examples, such as “B” for “Barbie” or “B” for “banana”.

It’s the perfect car game to get kids comfortable with spelling and gives them a chance to sound out words as they spot them. This game is sure to keep the kids occupied on those long drives!

4. Rev up the rhymes car game

Rhyming is a super fun (and effective) way of developing phonological awareness. Start off the game by taking your child’s first name and seeing how many words you can come up with that rhyme. Once everyone starts to get the hang of the game, take turns finding other things you see and come up with rhymes for those, too.

Want to crank up the challenge? Set a timer and see who can come up with the most rhymes under a time crunch. It’s a race against the clock, and it’ll keep everyone entertained while sneaking in some serious phonics practice!

5. Category Carousel

Vocabulary is key when it comes to building strong literary skills. To play this game, pick a theme, such as ‘red’ or ‘animals’. Get every family member to think of ten words that fall under this category.

This car game is great for boosting your child’s vocabulary, especially when they hear a new word and ask, “What does that mean?” It’s a simple and effective way to keep the car ride educational, and you might even find yourself learning a thing or two along the way!

6. Letter Quest

What’s more fitting than going on a rego letter quest on a road trip?! Take your child on a letter hunt! It’s like a scavenger hunt, but with a twist. They’ll be on the lookout for letters in places like car rego’s and road signs.

Start simple: Have your child spell a word that they know, such as their first name. From there, the hunt begins as they race to find every letter in their name. It’s a fantastic way to get them thinking about letters, sounds, and spelling, all while keeping the road trip fun and engaging.

7. Car Craze Challenge – what would you do?

Let’s talk about the car craze challenge. This game not only keeps the kids entertained on a long drive, but it also offers a peek into how your child thinks. It’s the perfect mix of fun and learning, as it taps into the same skills they use for comprehension, analysis and expression when applied to reading.

The idea is simple: think of an interesting scenario and ask your child, “What would you do?” Maybe it’s, “What would you do if you discovered hidden treasure?” or “What would you do if you got lost in the shopping mall?” The scenarios are endless. Watch as their imagination runs wild and their problem-solving skills kick in.

And if you’re looking to crank up the fun, load up some riddle books or educational apps like Reading Eggs on your phone or tablet to give your child a little positive screen time, especially when it’s packed with learning!
