How to Extend Your Outdoor Living Space

Your backyard and your front yard have so much potential when it comes to extending your living space. The house that you’ve bought isn’t just for you to live inside, but for you to learn how to extend it to live outside too. It doesn’t have to just have pretty gardens or just green grass and more lawn, but it can become the extension of your home you’ve been looking for.

Having a flow between your inside and outside spaces will help you to extend your living space and you can make it a priority too. With multiple lounge spaces, an outdoor gazebo, warm fire pits, dining areas and more, you can extend your living space and improve your overall environment. Let’s take a look at how you can extend your outdoor living space so that your indoor and outdoor spaces are more cohesive.

1. Move those materials out

You want to blur those lines between your indoor space and your outdoor space, so think about the materials that you use. Stone accents, the same flooring or even picking similar coloured and styled furniture in texture and shape can help. If you have light wooden textures inside, then extend that to your outdoor areas. If you’ve got woven rugs on the inside then outdoor rugs can also work. You want it to feel like one big space, and all you’re doing is simply throwing open the side of your house to experience it.

2. Be mindful of your outdoor furniture choices

Outdoor furniture can often look like indoor furniture with its soft cushions and elevated designs. The only difference is that outdoor furniture has been treated and built in a way that resists the weather. If you can choose outdoor furniture that looks like indoor furniture, then you’re going to create an illusion of inside space on the outside.

3. Have more than one outdoor seating area

Adding seating throughout your property is important. Inside the house, you may have a low coffee table with bean bags and then a dining table with four more chairs. Outside, you could have lounge chairs by the pool or a dining table and chairs under the covering. Two small seats on a bedroom balcony is a great way to extend your living space, as is having a seating area inside your outdoor gazebo. If you’ve got multiple outdoor seating areas, then you have multiple choices when it comes to relaxation.

4. Lighting

You can define your outdoor space with lighting that really makes a statement. Chandeliers over your outdoor dining table or a pendant in your pergola can make a big difference to the way guests feel drawn to the lounge areas. Lighting elevates the space, and you can go beyond the fairy lights in the bushes.

5. Warm the space

We talked about fire pits, and the reason for that is because you want to make sure that people feel comfortable spending time outside. In the summer months it’s not a problem, but in the winter months being able to light the fire pit and can really make a difference.
