It’s so much more than just managing a load to run your own trucking company. You have to manage people. You have to manage paperwork, but mostly you have to get your trucks through their regular inspections. If you don’t want an inspector to give you an order to take your trucks off the road and subsequently cost your business money, then you need to make sure that it’s maintained well enough to get through its inspection in the first place.

Getting your truck through inspection takes a lot of time and a lot of effort, and if you don’t work on getting your truck through those inspections, then you’re going to end up with a potential issue on your hands. From hydraulic pump repair to transmission checks, you have to be sure your truck will make it through. So, here’s how you can ensure your truck gets through an inspection in one piece.

What to do

  • Regularly inspect it yourself. Before your teams start getting into their trucks before their shifts, they need to do an inspection themselves. Trucks go through a lot of wear and tear, especially when they are doing long haul trips on the road. Catching something early is more important than having something break while you’re driving. Not only will that inconvenience your client as you can’t get their delivery to them, but that will inconvenience you. You should consider hiring a mechanic to look over your truck in the same way and inspection a dot officer would do.
  • Ensure that you are keeping up with all of your paperwork. Documentation and paperwork is important if you want to get your truck through inspection. DOT inspections cover so much more than just the physical truck itself, but they will check all of your records that you have to have on hand. If you are prepared for a DOT audit, you’re not going to worry about passing an inspection at all. There are plenty of free compliance checklists for DOT inspections online that you can use to help you to pass your inspection without a hitch.
  • Maintain professionalism. It’s nerve wracking to put your truck through an inspection, but you have to remember that the inspector is just doing their job. If the goal is to be compliant and you don’t have anything to hide, it should be an easy process. Making sure that your truck gets through this in one piece is all on your shoulders. Be professional and make sure that you are not over stressing by the time it comes around.
  • Higher the experts. If you want to make sure that your hydraulic pump is working correctly and your Allison Transmission is where it should be, then you need experts on hand who understand the nature of trucking and exactly what it entails to have one. If you do this, you will be able to keep on top of those inspections with no issues, and you’ll find your trucks maintained well and on the road at all times.
