Are you dealing with a slow draining sink in your property? Whether it’s in the kitchen or the bathroom, having a blocked sink is a pain. Learning how to unblock it yourself is one of the first ways that you can be more handy in your house.
Dealing with a block sink is very frustrating, but as long as you’re using the right approach for your particular pipes and sink, you’re going to be just fine. You can call plumbers in to help you if you need it, but if you want to ensure that your sink drains are as good as they were when you first had them installed, then you need to keep an eye on why they are blocking up. So let’s take a look at how you can unblock one before you figure out what’s blocking it in the first place.
Use boiling water. This is one of the simplest ways to unblock a sink, but if you’ve got PVC pipes, try not to use a fresh boiling kettle. Boiling a pot or a kettle of water is the first step, and then you have to slowly pour the water directly into the drain. This usually breaks down any grease or built up soap scum in the pipes and it helps to unblock the sink. The intense heat of the boiling water can melt some of the organic blockages, so this may not work if the blockage is caused by hair.
Mixbicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Start with a cup of baking soda into the drain and then you follow it with a cup of white vinegar. It creates a mini white volcano in your drain and it fizzes and works for several minutes. You’ll then apply the first method of boiling a kettle of water and pouring it down the drain to flush the mixture out and any loosened debris. Baking soda and vinegar together cause a chemical reaction and it produces a gas which fizzes and breaks down and loosens any blockages that are sticking in your sink.
Use caustic cleaners. When using a good caustic cleaner, you should always use gloves for this because caustic cleaners are hazardous for your skin. You pull the recommended amount into the drain and then you leave it for as long as it tells you to on the bottle. You then flush it thoroughly with cold water this time and not hot water. But this is not a method you should be using if you have PVC or old piping because you could eat through the piping. The strong chemicals dissolve any organic materials so it’s great for hair.
Get the plunger out. Just like with the toilet blockages you can use a plunger to unblock your sink. Place the plunger over the drain and create a hard seal, and then pump the plunger with short sharp movements several times. The seal should help suck out the blockages and physically move them along the pipe. You should check if the water is draining smoothly after a few pumps so that you know whether or not you’ve done the job.
