My Evening Wind Down Routine with Mariah Rota, Founder of COLE Hair Studio

Mariah Rota is the Founder and Director of COLE Hair Studio in Double Bay and Mosman, and the Owner and Managing Director of Hairtalk Hair Extensions Australia and New Zealand.

Mariah began her career working alongside ‘The Hair Master’ himself, Joh Bailey, bringing smiles, warmth and positive energy to every client. Quickly earning a reputation as the ‘Queen of Extensions’ and one of Sydney’s leading hair experts, she went on to open her own salons and launched a thriving hair extension business, all while being an educator for over 200 salons across Australia. We find out how she winds down after a busy day.

5 – 7PM

I usually wrap up work around 5PM, and this marks the beginning of my wind-down ritual. On the drive home, I mentally check out from the day, relaxing my mindset to decompress. Once I’m through the door, I make sure the house is clean and organised – a tidy space always clears my mind too. My partner is the chef in our relationship, so while he’s busy in the kitchen, I’m filling him in on my entire day (with all the gossip included, of course!). After a quick shower and changing into cozy clothes, I dive straight into my admin work. I like to have all admin tasks ticked off early so I can truly relax for the evening. If I missed my morning walk, I squeeze one in before dinner – it helps me release any tension both physically and mentally.

7 – 9PM

This is my absolute favourite time of day. It’s when everything slows down and I can completely focus on myself. I meditate, a practice that’s been a part of my life for years, and I journal, a habit I’ve kept since I was 14. Journaling lets me reflect and clear my mind.

My skincare routine is short and sweet, about 25 seconds! But it’s the ritual that matters. I love lighting candles while I meditate; it sets a peaceful mood.

9 – 11PM (and beyond)

By 9PM, I’m usually tucked into bed with the lamps on low, ready to watch a movie or TV show to fully unwind. It’s my little slice of calm before sleep.

Are you a night owl or a morning lark?

Definitely a morning lark! I’ve been that way since I was very young. Mornings have always been when I feel my best.

What is the one thing you do that always guarantees a good night’s sleep?

A few small rituals really help: body moisturising, meditation, fresh clean sheets, and setting the room to the perfect temperature. It’s the combination that sets the tone for a restful night.

Do you use any technology to track your sleep patterns?

No, I don’t! To be honest, I’d probably be a little concerned if I saw just how little sleep I sometimes get.

Does your wind down routine change between weeknights and weekends?

Yes, absolutely. I only have Sundays off, so I really slow everything down on that day. It’s all about slow mornings, slow walks, slow everything – a complete reset for the week ahead.
