My Evening Wind Down Routine with Meghan McTavish, Founder of The Plotline

Meghan McTavish is the writer and founder of The Plotline, a journal that guides you to screenwrite your day as the main character in the ‘movie’ of your life. Meghan made it after going through a break-up and realised she hadn’t prioritised herself or her self-care for a long time. She realised that if she pretended there was an imaginary audience watching her, she lived and treated herself better. Less scrolling, more doing! She also hosts a podcast called SELF care-ISH, all about giving yourself love after a break-up. We find out how she winds down after a busy day.

5-7 PM

Like most people I can fall into screen addiction and I’ve probably been staring at my computer 90% of the day so when 5pm hits I grab a bottle of water and head to Burleigh Beach with my new puppy, Lady.

Before getting Lady I never used to speak to anyone and now, thanks to her, I have about 10 spontaneous in-person conversations with strangers every day. Very Plotline coded! Ha.

7-9PM

I’m kind of like Sylvia Plath in that baths are my happy place. I honestly don’t feel ready for bed until I’ve soaked and really pondered the universe. I started a little collection of things to make bath time more luxe and special so these are my OG recommendations for any fellow bathing connoisseur.

  1. You need 2 pumps of the Bioderma Shower Oil to moisturise your skin while you wash.
  2. A few drops of the LUSH Sticky Dates Shower Gel. It has the most delicious vanilla scent ever.
  3. And finally the Molton Brown Tobacco Absolute Bath and Shower Gel. It just goes so well with the vanilla. You can thank me later!

9-11PM (or beyond)

I have to do one thing creative per day otherwise I go a little stir crazy, so often I sit with my laptop in bed searching for great 80s b-roll VHS footage online to use for social media.

But without fail, no matter what, I do my plotline for the next day. So this is a process of getting my mind in-the-game for tomorrow. I plan the theme and tone for what I want my day to be. With The Plotline we title it and separate it into acts.

But it’s really about taking a beat to just plan my next day. It helps me feel in control and calmer (especially when things feel chaotic). Then my mind is clear to read. I am currently working my way through the Court of Thorns and Roses series. #TEAMRhysand

Are you a night owl or a morning lark?

Always morning. I start at 4.30am with my daily animal care and 7-year-old-getting-ready-for-school routines.

What is the one thing that you do that always guarantees a good night’s sleep?

Journaling. It’s a practice that’s been constant for the past 5 years. I feel weird if I haven’t.

Do you use any technology to track your sleep patterns?

My life is SO tech-driven that I actively try to diminish the tech in my room. I know I’ve had a good sleep when I haven’t woken up to scroll at 2am. Ha.

Does your wind down routine change between weeknights and the weekend?

I am a creature of habit and so my weekends look exactly the same. Maybe punctuated with one or two episodes of Only Murders In The Building for good measure.
