5-7PM
I’ll have dinner somewhere in there, generally around 6ish. It’s usually home-cooked as my job is very social with lots of lunches and dinners, so I try to balance that. I very occasionally order takeout; if I’m going to eat “outside” food, I’d much rather eat it “outside” my house.
7-9PM
My favourite part of the day: contact lenses come out, and I take a very, very hot shower (terrible for the skin, but I like what I like!). I’ll double-cleanse my face and use a foaming body wash. Bliss. Then I slip on my pyjamas, do my nighttime skincare routine and put on my glasses (I’m extremely short-sighted).
9-11PM (or beyond)
As my work is lots of writing and reading, for me, television is relaxing in a way that books are not (I save them for weekends when I try not to work). So I’ll settle in front of the TV for an hour or two, often with a handful of potato chips (a weakness), then I’ll make a lemon and ginger tea and have that with some dark chocolate. I’m usually in bed by 10pm.
1. Are you a night owl or a morning lark?
Morning person, for sure. My brain is functioning, I’m energetic and it’s all systems go. Everything starts going downhill around 3pm.
2. What is the one thing that you do that always guarantees a good night’s sleep
The hot shower is my body’s signal that it’s wind-down time. It’s why a couple of days a week, I’ll have two showers, one after a morning workout and then the usual evening shower. I cannot go to sleep without that night shower.
3. Do you use any technology to track your sleep patterns?
I don’t use apps for anything health-related; I mean, I still use a paper diary to track my cycle. I’ll know if I’ve had a good night’s sleep if I wake up before my alarm, which I usually do.
4. Does your wind down routine change between weeknights and the weekend?
Not really. I’m a creature of habit, as my gloss etc co-founder, Sarah, will confirm. Even if I’ve had a really late night, I’ll still wake up at the regular time and before the alarm. I’ll be cranky and maybe have two coffees that day, but my eyes will open bright and early.
