Night Visions: A Trippy, Technicolour Trip Through Adelaide Botanic Garden

Get ready, Adelaide, something seriously spectacular is coming this winter. Night Visions is the first major event announced for the 2025 Illuminate Adelaide program, and it’s not only a light show, it’s a full-blown sensory journey that’ll turn the Adelaide Botanic Garden into something straight out of a dream. Think lasers, projections, soundscapes and thousands of lights, all coming together to twist and transform the familiar into something surreal.

From 2 to 20 July, the garden becomes a living portal into parallel dimensions. Iconic spots like Ficus Avenue and the Bicentennial Conservatory will be unrecognisable, in the best possible way. This is a choose-your-own-pace, self-guided experience, so you’re free to wander (and wonder) for as long as you like. But trust us you’ll want at least an hour to take it all in.

The creative lineup reads like a fantasy team of visual and audio wizards. UK-based light sculpture artist Amelia Kosminsky, Melbourne’s laser and sound sorcerer Robin Fox, and Sydney’s site-responsive projection legend Craig Walsh will join local stars Chris Petridis (lighting designer and Night Visions Associate Creative Director) and Jayden Sutherland of The Bakery Design Co. It’s a who’s who of immersive art, all working together to blend light, colour and movement with the natural beauty of the gardens after dark.

And let’s not forget the sound. Award-winning Melbourne composer and sound designer Jethro Woodward is crafting the audio backdrop—so every step, shift in light and flicker of laser will be wrapped in a custom soundscape that moves with you.

Expect some serious magic. The Bamboo Walk will become a prism-tunnel of wonder, thanks to Kosminsky’s kaleidoscopic vision. Walsh, working with Cultural Consultant Jack Buckskin, will turn trees into animated portraits honouring First Nations stories and spirit. Meanwhile, Fox will unleash laser madness inside the Bicentennial Conservatory, turning it into a radiant, multi-faceted jewel box. Petridis will use light as theatre, creating vivid atmospheres that move and pulse, while Sutherland brings emotion, motion and sonic layering to the entire visual experience.

Feeling fancy? You can also upgrade to a Night Visions dining package and eat amongst the installations with a special menu at The Botanic Lodge. It’s tucked lakeside between major installations and only available Friday through Sunday with four seating times. It’s a dinner setting you won’t find anywhere else in South Australia.

Night Visions follows in the dazzling footsteps of past Illuminate Adelaide hits like Light Cycles, Resonate, and Fire Gardens, and it’s shaping up to be just as unforgettable. As Illuminate co-founders Lee Cumberlidge and Rachael Azzopardi put it, this fifth anniversary event is designed to transport you—mind, body and soul.

The full 2025 Illuminate Adelaide program drops on April 29, but early bird tickets for Night Visions are on sale now just $37 if you jump in before midnight on April 20 (while they last).

Mark your calendars, grab your walking shoes (and maybe a jacket), and prepare to be transported.
