Should You Build Your Dream House? 4 Reasons to Consider

Buying a house is widely considered one of the most stressful experiences of your life. You have to deal with lawyers, agents, sellers, and brokers, and you have a lot of pressure to find the ideal house. While there are ways to make this easier, such as by using a buyer’s agent who will be on your side, some people are tempted to build a house instead.

This isn’t to say that building a house isn’t stressful either. But there are some good reasons to consider a home build rather than buying an existing house.

1. Potential Savings

If you’ve ever considered buying or building a house, one question probably comes up a lot. Is it cheaper to buy or build a house? Unfortunately, there isn’t a short answer, unless you count “it depends”.

When you build a house, you have to factor in the cost of the land, as well as the cost of construction and materials. There are ways to save money when building a house, such as doing some of the work yourself.

As a general rule, you can save money when building a house, even if you get contractors in, but it often depends on where you’re buying a plot, the size of the project, and how high-end you want the finish to be.

    2. Choosing the Perfect Plot

Before you can build a house, you need land. For many people, this is one of the biggest benefits of building a house, because you get to pick and choose where it goes. You do need to make sure that the land is suitable for a house and, ideally, near amenities and easy to connect to power and water.

But most plots of land are much larger than what you’d typically get if you just bought a house and the surrounding backyard. This gives you a lot more space to play with, and is perfect for people who want a massive backyard or garden.

      3. Designing Your Dream Home

The most compelling reason to build rather than buy is that you get to design your house from scratch, not just make do with what someone else has done. Get in touch with a new home builder and talk to them about your ideas for your home.

This is great if you have specific needs, such as an office or workspace, or if someone in your home uses a wheelchair and may need wider hallways and doorways.

        4. Build to Let

As mentioned above, you often get a lot of extra land when you build a house. While it could be good to use this for yourself, another idea could be to build some additional properties on your land.

This is ideal for moving family members nearby so you can support each other while still having separate living areas, but you can also build these properties and let them to tenants. You can then earn a passive income from your home build, and you can always use the properties for something else in the future.
