A little-known fact about me is that before I landed a dream role in TV journalism, I worked in the jewellery business. Diamonds have been in my bloodline for a long time. My uncle, Craig Blizzard has been a jeweller for over 50 years and my cousin Kara is a designer, needless to say, I know a thing or two about jewellery and have built a great collection over time. I have also launched an ethical, lab-grown jewellery business, The Cut Jewellery. For anyone looking to build up a jewellery collection, here are my tips.
1. Plan Your Collection
Jewellery is not cheap if you are investing in nice pieces, so remember to plan your collection and build it up slowly over time. It may take a few years to build a collection but if you invest wisely and strategically you will find you have pieces you wear again and again. If you are investing in Jewellery, you want to make sure it is wearable over many seasons. Start off slowly and buy foundational pieces that you can build on. For example:
Diamond studs: These are a timeless classic that can really sit well with any outfit. Whether they’re a small stud (around .25 carat each) or something larger, like a 1 carat each, the cost per wear for diamond studs makes them an essential purchase!
Gold hoop earrings: Keep them as simple and classic as possible – you’ll reach for them again and again.
Tennis bracelet: Tennis bracelets have been in fashion for a long time. They are timeless, classic and resell well.
2. Buy a piece to plan your outfit around
A statement piece like a diamond tennis necklace or chunky gold chain lifts any outfit, especially if you are someone who prefers to go with beige, black or white colour palettes in general. Having a couple of statement pieces is a good, simple way to dress up any look.
3. Once you have the basics sorted, look for some more unique pieces
Jewellery is not only a personal thing, but it is a great way to express yourself. Therefore, once you have your basics sorted, it’s good to find a few unique pieces that are quintessentially “you”. Think a chunky gold cocktail ring, or perhaps a chunky ring with a coloured centre stone that will pop. This can be layered also with your more simple and classic pieces. Personalised jewellery, or a bespoke piece that truly reflects you is perfect too.
4. Trending Jewellery
Jewellery has become a very popular accessory with outfits in recent times. Beware of investing in pieces that are purely a fad – and that you won’t want to wear for the rest of your life. If there is something that’s trending for the moment don’t be afraid to buy a lower-cost version or a gold-plated version.
5. Less is more when accessorising jewellery
While stacks of rings and necklaces have become popular, don’t over-accessorise. The simplicity of a dainty piece or a simple ring on your hand can’t be overstated.
