The Surprising Benefits of Home Automation

Home automation was once a staple of science fiction. We’d be able to interact with computers by talking to them and be able to control the temperature, set timers, and play music in the same way. We can even devise strict schedules that determine how our homes are powered and heated.

Many, if not all, of these features, are now a reality. And yet, while some of the conveniences that come with home automation are obvious, others are more subtle. Let’s take a look at a few of them, and see what surprises there might be.

Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

When you’re heating an empty home, you’re wasting money. Through home automation, you can arrange that your boiler runs only to the extent that it actually benefits you. This might mean arranging for it to come on just as you’re leaving work, or just a few minutes before you get up in the morning.

The same might apply to the lighting and cooling systems in your home. The same idea applies to the lighting in your home. With the rise of smart tech in housing, modern lighting systems can automatically adjust based on the time of day or whether someone is in the room. This not only cuts down on energy use but also helps reduce your electricity bills over time.

By getting on top of these problems, you might keep your home on the right side of future regulations, too.

Enhanced Home Security

Home automation can help to connect your home with a variety of sophisticated, modern security devices. These might include motion sensors, security cameras, locks and alarms. These devices might pass data through your home network and to your smartphone – meaning that you’ll be kept alert to any problems at home, wherever in the world you are.

Improved Comfort and Convenience

Of course, the major benefit of home automation, in theory, is that it will remove some of the stress associated with getting appliances working. It’s more intuitive and easier to simply tell a home assistant that the lights should come on than it is to flick a switch yourself.

With the help of a few specialized components, like relay sockets, you can integrate your systems with one another and make your home-management experience seamless across all areas of the building.

Future-Proofing Your Home

It’s possible that in the future, home buyers will expect a certain degree of automation built into their homes as standard. By investing now, you might protect the value of your home, as well as enjoy all of the other benefits we’ve touched upon.

It’s worth thinking about how the standards for home automation might evolve over time. For example, the use of Artificial Intelligence and so-called ‘Internet of Things’ appliances might become commonplace, to the extent that existing standards and appliances might be rendered obsolete. Before upgrading, therefore, it’s an idea to think about whether it’s worth waiting for certain technologies to mature. For example, installing a new router that’s compatible with the latest version of WiFi might be worthwhile!
