The term “self-care” is thrown around a lot these days, but most of us don’t fully understand what it means. More than personal hygiene, it encompasses emotional and mental well-being. Because it is so complex, there are some self-care mistakes we all make.

1. Reacting Instead of Acting First

The golden rule of self-care is that it should be a proactive solution to issues. The problem is that many of us react to an issue after it arises instead of engaging with our problems head on to prevent problems occurring in the first place. Consider skincare as part of your self-care routine. Products like acne treatment cream, dandruff shampoo and active skincare can help prevent skin problems before they occur. They should be part of your routine before problems arise.

2. Spending Too Much Money

You don’t need to spend tons of cash for self-care. Of course, nothing is free. But because self-care is a trending and popular topic, there are influencers and savvy business owners who are making money from it. But self-care can begin with a notepad and pen for journaling, dream writing and listing SMART goals. By shopping around, you can save money on popular brands and items to assist with your self-care journey.

3. Emotional Self-Care Mistakes

The whole idea of self-care is to ensure a healthy balance between the mind, body and soul. When in sync, you feel the best you possibly can. Of course, we all have emotional stress. A 2020 survey by Gallup found that a massive 74% of people have felt unable to cope with life. Ignoring how you feel about things is a common self-care mistake. Rather than shying away from emotions, take note of when they arise and why, so you can proactively work on de-stressing.

4. Not Establishing a Reliable Routine

Most of us go from day to day with no real idea of what to do or expect. A reliable routine is a core part of self-care, yet many of us choose to leave this out. Life and work get in the way of most things and a routine can seem futile. However, even shoehorning in a couple of self-care activities per day will make a massive difference to your life. Hygiene routines should be done every morning. But you can also schedule meditation, pampering, and alone time or simply take five minutes out to reconnect with nature.

5. Thinking of it as an Extra Task

A self-care routine addresses the issues in your life, and it can be hard to get going at first. But thinking of the self-care activities you need as extra tasks or chores can make you not want to do them. Over time, self-care tasks such as meditation or journaling should merge into your overall daily routine like they were always there. This combination makes it easier to address the things in your life in a proactive manner. With patience, these will become as easy and routine as doing laundry.
