5 Tips and Tricks for Making Perfect Mashed Potatoes Every Time

Who doesn’t love Mashed Potatoes? Creamy, smooth and delicious, mashed potatoes are the ultimate comfort food and the perfect side dish for many meals. Whether you’re looking to make a simple and classic version or add some extra flavor and texture, these tips and tricks will help you achieve the perfect mashed potatoes every time. From selecting the right potatoes to using the right tools and techniques, these tips will guide you through the process of making delicious and creamy mashed potatoes that everyone will love, time and time again.

1. Use the right type of potatoes

Use starchy potatoes, such as russet or Yukon Gold, for the best texture and flavor. These varieties of potatoes have a high starch content which results in a creamy and smooth texture. Avoid using waxy potatoes such as red or new potatoes, as they tend to become more gluey when mashed.

2. Cook potatoes correctly

Boil the potatoes in salted water to add flavor and help prevent them from becoming waterlogged. It is also important to cook the potatoes until they are tender but not mushy. Boil the potatoes in the salted water until a fork can easily pierce through them. If the potatoes are undercooked, they will be lumpy and if they are overcooked, they will be too mushy.

3. Drain potatoes well

Drain the potatoes well and return them to the hot pot to dry out for a minute or two before mashing. Cook the potatoes over low heat for a minute or two to dry them out and remove any excess water. This step helps to prevent a watery mashed potato.

4. Use the right mashing tools

Use a potato ricer/masher or a food mill to create a smooth and fluffy mashed potato. A food processor or a blender will turn the potatoes into gluey and runny paste (trust us we have tried it!) and should be avoided.

5. Add butter, flavor and seasonings

Add butter, cream, and/or warm milk to the potatoes while they are still hot to help them absorb the liquid and become creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. You can also add other ingredients like Greek yoghurt, sour cream, garlic, herbs (we love chives and parsley) or cheese to enhance the flavor of your mashed potatoes.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to make delicious and creamy mashed potatoes every time.
