What if I could tell you that the best “anti-aging” serum exists within you – free, accessible and profoundly impactful. Yep. It’s all in your breath!
The better we breathe, the less tension we hold and the less tension in the body, the more lifted, open, and radiant the face appears. Breathwork doesn’t just calm the mind. It helps the body function as it’s designed to. In balance, in flow, and in harmony with itself and when this occurs. Our face and skin tell the story.
When clients come to me for their skin, my approach is integrative. I look at the fascia, where they’re holding tension, and how they’re breathing. Why? Because. Our breath when used purposefully communicates directly with our parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to bring us into an “rest and digest state, out of stress. Stress that otherwise would influences the fascia, lymphatic system, and digestion. All of which are vital for healthy, radiant skin.
When we’re stressed, our breathing becomes shallow and the body stays in “fight or flight” which causes Fascia to tighten which will impact blood flow, block lymphatic drainage, restrict oxygen delivery to the skin. This can then lead to puffiness, dullness, dehydration, and a loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin.
Fascia and our breath work together to support in anti-aging with Fascia supporting our collagen integrity and hyaluronic acid production that keeps us looking “youthful”, hydrated and plump. When we use breathwork to shift the body into a “rest and digest” state, we tell the fascia it’s safe to release. This simple shift restores circulation and flow, allowing the body to naturally repair and rejuvenate.
This is why I always start all my in salon treatments with a guided breathwork designed to drop my clients into a deeply restorative state and why I teach a Fascia First approach with breathwork to all my students.
So. The next time you want to reach for the “miracle serum” try this instead and know that you’re creating a beauty elixir with your body.
The Box Breathing Technique
1. Inhale gently through your nose for 4 counts. Feel your belly and ribs expand with each breath
2. Hold your breath for 4 counts. Keep your body relaxed .
3. Exhale slowly through your nose for 4 counts. Let the air leave the body completely, releasing any tension.
4. Hold again for 4 counts at the bottom of the breath. Feel the quiet pause before the next inhale begins.
Then repeat this cycle for 4 to 6 rounds, or longer if it feels good. You can do this anytime, anywhere to help your body come back to a relaxed state and to activate your inner glow.
