Moving house is stressful. There are always lots of things that you need to think about and consider, and this can result in missing some important tasks. While you want to move in and get settled as quickly as possible, there are some activities that you should consider doing before you move everything in. Here are some important steps you shouldn’t miss when moving house.

Check what is included

When you buy a house, your circumstances will be very different to anyone else’s. This means you should not make any assumptions as to what to expect is going to be inside the property when you get the keys. This will also look very different depending on whether you have purchased a new build property or an existing home. If you have purchased one of the terrace homes from a new development, they will likely come with a range of new features and appliances. If you have purchased an existing home, you will need to speak with your legal team, as they will be able to provide you with a list of items that are going to be in the property when you move in. Many people forget to consider this and are very unprepared when they move in. If you assess these lists before you move, you will know whether you need to source things like cookers and fridges, as well as things like light bulbs and curtain rails. The last thing you want is to move in and not be able to use the home or be comfortable in it.

When buying a home, you want to ensure everything goes to plan and that means securing the right buyers agent for a start. Make sure you find someone you trust and who is an expert at getting what the buyer – you – needs.

Clean the property before you move in

The first thing you should do when you get the keys to the property is view it again. You should make a list and a plan of things that need doing, including cleaning, decluttering and repairs. If it is possible to do so, you should try and delay your moving-in date, so you can spend the first few days deep cleaning the property. This will ensure there are no underlying issues, such as mould, dampness or pests that will ruin your belongings. It will also give you a nice clean start at the property, as it will be more difficult to achieve after you have moved your belongings in.

Make it your own

The best thing you can do when you have purchased a new property is make it your own. Even if the property is in great condition or is a new build so everything is fresh, you must customise it to your tastes. This could be with a renovation or some new paint. It could also be as simple as decorating it with your own decor. This will make it feel nice and cosy, and somewhere that you want to be.
