Meghan Markle’s Watercolour Sugar Cookies from With Love, Meghan

Watercolour sugar cookies are one of the prettiest ways to bring a little magic to holiday baking, which is why they feature in With Love, Meghan Holiday Celebration. They turn a simple iced cookie into a tiny piece of art, giving you full permission to play with colour, shimmer, and soft brushstrokes. The best part is that you do not need any special skills. If you can swirl a paintbrush, you can make these. Each cookie becomes a blank canvas, ready for pastel washes, delicate patterns, or whatever the season inspires. They are gentle, creative, and relaxing to make, and the finished cookies look almost too lovely to eat, almost. Perfect for gifting, table settings, or a quiet afternoon of holiday crafting, these watercolour treats add a personal touch that feels thoughtful and festive without complicating the baking process.

Ingredients

Sugar cookies iced with royal icing and dried completely
Gel food coloring
Vodka or almond extract, to dilute coloring
Edible luster dust, for additional decoration
Royal icing, to attach any nonpareils used

Method

  1. Create edible food “watercolors” by dabbing gel food coloring on a clean palette or plate and diluting it with vodka or almond extract. Mix with a paintbrush until you achieve your desired color saturation, anywhere from 1 drop to 1/2 teaspoon. Make lighter hues by adding more alcohol or almond extract and darker colors by adding less. The paint should be thin enough to move around on your palette but not so thin that it’s watered down when you paint it on your cookie. It is best to do this separately from the other gel food coloring colors.
  2. If using edible luster dust, add 1/4 teaspoon dust with a few drops of vodka or almond extract and mix with a paintbrush until you achieve your desired consistency.
  3. Dip your paintbrush into the edible paint and create designs on your cookie “canvas.” Rinse brush between colors. Do the same with the edible luster dust.
  4. Attach any flourishes using royal icing as the glue.
  5. Let dry completely, about 1 hour, and enjoy!
