My Evening Wind Down Routine with Monique McCutchan, Co-founder of Monista Tea Co.

Monique McCutchan is a tea merchant and co-founder of speciality tea company Monista Tea Co. Mum of three teenagers and a menagerie of animals, Monique divides her time between Melbourne and her cattle property in country Victoria. When not running around after three busy teenagers, she can be found working on her farm and in her beloved garden.

5 – 7PM

As a busy Mum of three teenagers, I’m usually driving children to their various activities or at home cooking a mountain of food for three very hungry teenagers.

7 – 9PM

Dinner is usually around 7pm, the reality of having a family of five usually means there are two dinner sittings. This way everyone has at least one or two people to eat with. Dinner is usually wrapping up around 8pm. 8pm – 9pm is usually as special time with my youngest daughter. We make a pot of Persian Mint tea, we give each other a little hand massage and watch a show. At present we are watching Anne of Green Gables.

9 – 11PM

Once my youngest goes to bed, I pop the kettle on again and brew a pot of Camomile on the Nile. Some nights we watch television as a family, other nights I read. We are currently watching The Reluctant Traveller with Eugene Levy and I’m currently reading Still Life by Sarah Winman.

Are you a night owl or a morning lark?

Absolutely a morning lark. I’m up by 5am during the week and usually around 6am on the weekend.

What is the one thing that you do that always guarantees a good night’s sleep?

I really value sleep. It is so important for our health and wellbeing. I find the following guarantees a good night’s sleep – Camomile tea, no alcohol, no electronic devises in the bedroom, a dark, cool bedroom. I also invested in a silk eye mask last year – I absolutely love it.

Do you use any technology to track your sleep patterns?

No, but I am interested in how technology could assist sleep pattens.

Does your wind down routine change between weeknights and the weekend?

Absolutely. Weekends are very social and busy and nights are often late. I try to have a small 20 minute nap of Saturday and Sunday afternoon to recharge before we socialise.
