Robert Irwin Accidentally ‘Dines and Dashes’ at The Jetty Pavilion — Then Makes It Right in the Most Aussie Way

In a move that proves even the most wholesome Aussies have a forgetful moment now and then, Robert Irwin recently found himself in a very unintentional crime caper: a dine and dash at a sunny Coffs Harbour café.

The wildlife warrior, known for wrangling crocodiles and winning hearts on television, stopped in at The Jetty Pavilion for a quiet lunch while on the road. But after enjoying a take out salad, Irwin left without paying the bill, an honest slip-up that had staff wondering, “Did Robert Irwin just ghost us?” The answer, amusingly, was yes.

But like any good-natured national treasure, Robert quickly set things right. Taking to Instagram with his signature charm, he issued a public apology that was equal parts humble and hilarious.

“Big whoops. A few days ago, I had a delicious lunch at the Jetty Pavilion in Coffs Harbour… and walked off without paying! I feel TERRIBLE,” Irwin wrote, adding, “I’m sorry guys! Please check your messages, I’d love to fix this ASAP!

The team at The Jetty Pavilion, clearly more starstruck than angry, replied in good humour, saying, “All is forgiven,” and adding they were just “waiting for a koala to bring the money down from Australia Zoo.”

The now famous salad

Irwin’s fans were quick to jump in with puns and praise, dubbing it “the most wholesome dine and dash in history.” One follower joked, “He’s too busy saving animals to remember the EFTPOS.” Another added, “Only Robert Irwin could forget to pay for lunch and still be considered a national treasure.”

It’s not the first time a celebrity has made headlines in Coffs Harbour, but it might be the most endearing. With his quick apology, public shout-out to the café, and genuine embarrassment, Irwin turned a minor mishap into a PR win for both himself and The Jetty Pavilion, who, no doubt, are now firmly on the foodie map.

And if you’re wondering: yes, both Robert and The Jetty Pavilion have settled the bill. No wildlife was harmed, and no police were involved, just a very Australian moment of kindness, honesty, and roadtrip-fuelled forgetfulness.

As for Robert? We’d still trust him with the wildlife, but maybe next time, someone else can handle the check.
