Anxious, Stressed or Nearing Burnout? How Regulating Your Nervous System Can Help

In today’s fast-paced world, many of us find ourselves teetering on the edge of burnout. The relentless pace of modern life – endless notifications, back-to-back meetings, and unyielding pressure to perform – can leave our nervous systems in a state of chronic stress. When stress becomes a constant companion, it’s not just our mental health that suffers; our physical health pays the price too. By learning to regulate our nervous system, we can begin to reclaim balance, enhance our resilience, and ultimately lead richer, more fulfilling lives. By David Altamura, co-founder of Wildsoul Wellness.

Understanding Your Nervous System

Our nervous system is constantly working to keep us balanced, shifting between states of alertness and relaxation depending on our environment. In moments of stress, it activates the “fight or flight” response to prepare us for action. This is a natural and necessary function, but when triggered too often, it can leave us feeling wired, exhausted and unable to switch off.

Over time, this can lead to a cascade of issues–from sleep disturbances and anxiety to digestive problems and weakened immunity. At the core of this is the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which controls involuntary processes like heart rate, digestion and stress responses. It operates in two primary states: the sympathetic nervous system (our “fight or flight” mode) and the parasympathetic nervous system (our “rest and digest” mode). When we’re chronically stressed, we get stuck in sympathetic overdrive, making it harder for our body to return to a state of calm and repair. This is why learning to regulate our nervous system is so crucial–it allows us to shift between these states more efficiently, preventing burnout and promoting long-term health.

The Science of Contrast Therapy and Recovery

One of the most effective ways to regulate your nervous system is through intentional recovery practices, particularly contrast therapy; This involves alternating between heat and cold exposures, such as an infrared sauna followed by cold therapy. The shift between hot and cold stimulates circulation, promotes lymphatic drainage, and enhances the body’s ability to manage stress. On a physiological level, this practice strengthens the autonomic nervous system by training it to switch between alertness and relaxation more efficiently. It has been suggested that if you finish hot it is good for calmness, and cold is good for alertness or focus.

Other recovery modalities, like red light therapy and PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) waves, work at a cellular level to reduce inflammation, support energy production and improve overall resilience to stress. These therapies don’t just target physical recovery–they actually help regulate the nervous system, making it easier for the body to transition from high-stress states to deep rest.

Breathwork, too, plays a vital role in nervous system regulation. Conscious, controlled breathing has been shown to lower cortisol levels, activate the vagus nerve, and shift the body into a parasympathetic state–our natural “rest and digest” mode. Even just a few minutes of slow, intentional breathing can create a profound sense of calm, helping the body reset from the demands of daily life.

Finding Balance in Everyday Life

It’s easy to believe that recovery is something we do when we have time–an occasional luxury rather than an essential part of our routine. But what if we flipped that perspective? Just as we prioritise movement, nutrition and sleep, we must also prioritise nervous system regulation. Carving out space for deep rest–whether it’s through contrast therapy, infrared saunas or intentional breathwork–can help us move through life with more ease. The more we cultivate nervous system regulation, the better we are at meeting life’s challenges head-on.
