Escape: Glenorchy, New Zealand – Crystal Clear Waters, Snow-Capped Mountains and the Home of Middle Earth

Located a 45 minute drive from Queenstown on the northern shores of the stunning Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand’s Otago region is the picturesque town of Glenorchy. The town itself has a tiny population of only a few hundred and is a pretty village with restaurants and cafes, however the main attraction in the area is the magnificent scenery and abundance of outdoor walks, hikes and activities centred around the lake and nearby mountains.

The stunning scenery of Glenorchy has been featured in many Hollywood films including The Lord of the Rings, X-Men and The Chronicles of Narnia and it is so easy to see why – crystal clear waters, towering mountains snow-capped much of the year and gorgeous views as far as the eye can see.

The road itself from Queenstown to Glenorchy is one of the most picturesque journeys in the world and it is well worth taking the extra time to stop for photo opportunities or just to admire the view.

We would suggest making a day of it and fitting in a hike and, if time permits, horse riding or kayaking in the crystal clear waters of the lake.

Virgin Australia flies from Sydney or Melbourne to Queenstown and we stayed and the beautiful Waldmann Cottage when we visited, nearby Queenstown has plenty of accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets.

If you are looking for a gorgeous day trip from Queenstown add Glenorchy to your list, you will definitely not be disappointed!

  7. Omg, as someone who lives most of her days in a bowl (New Orleans), I can’t tell you how envious I am!!! We have great sail racing, but those trees and mountains… there’s nothing to compare to that (and your weather)

    • New Zealand really is the most beautiful place – pure air, gorgeous mountains and lakes and so quiet! We haven’t visited New Orleans yet but it’s on our list!
