Romswood Peony Farm, Macedon Ranges

About one hour north of Melbourne, in Australia’s beautiful Macedon Ranges region is the beautiful Peony farm, Romswood. Opened to the public for a few days a year during the fleeting peony season in November, Romswood is a wonderful day out for peony lovers and anyone who appreciates a relaxing day in the countryside.

As you approach the farm, located in the tiny village of Kerrie, you get a true appreciation for what a beautiful part of the world it is, undulating green valleys, rich red volcanic soil and a sense of true peacefulness – it’s hard to believe that it is only an hour away from the bustling metropolitan city of Melbourne.

Rows and rows of peonies, in various stages of bloom greet you, alongside the very friendly Romswood team. Entry is $15 per adult ($13 if you pre-book online), and children are free.

There are gourmet burgers, cakes and drinks available and visitors are also encouraged to bring their own picnics to be enjoyed on the lawns.

There is a lovely gift shop and a little stall selling peony plants for purchase for those who want to try their luck growing peonies at home (ele tip – you need to be in a cool to cold climate location to have success).

The team will instruct you on how to pick the peonies and give you tips about the best buds to pick (in a soft ball like a marshmallow!). Pick-your-own stems of peonies are $2.50 each and you can borrow secateurs for a deposit, or bring your own.

Peonies aren’t the only feature at Romswood, magnificent mature trees, irises and cherry blossom are just some of the other beautiful flora on display in the gardens. Furry friends on leash are also welcome at Romswood, making it truly a day out that the whole family can enjoy.

For more information including open days and ticket bookings visit Romswood’s website here. With current Covid restrictions you may need to wait until 2022 =to enjoy this beautiful spot – put it in the diary for next year!
