The Best Places To See Autumn Leaves In Australia

Autumn is in full swing in Australia and while the northern parts of the country are still enjoying warm, tropical weather, in the south and cool mountain regions, the leaves have started to turn putting on a stunning display of fall colours. These are some of our favorite places to experience the turning of the leaves.

1. Macedon Ranges, Victoria

Less than an hour north of Melbourne, the tiny hamlet of Mount Macedon is awash with stunning autumn colours and open gardens where you can see beautiful autumn leaves in all of their glory. While this used to be a hidden secret, in recent years it has become a very popular spot to see the changing leaves, our tip is to visit early in the week when it is quieter.

Make sure you don’t miss Honour Avenue in Macedon, a truly spectacular tree lined street. The open gardens at Tieve Tara and Forest Glade are also a must-visit. Nearby towns of Woodend and Kyneton also have beautiful leaves on display. www.visitmacedonranges.com.au

2. Bright, Victoria

In Victoria’s alpine region the pretty town of Bright, situated on the Ovens River, is one of the most popular places in the country to experience autumn while enjoying the brisk mountain air and the numerous hiking and cycling trails in the area.

There is plenty to do in the region, visit the Milawa Cheese Factory, Brown Brothers winery, the pretty historic town of Beechworth (don’t miss the brewery!) or take a hike up beautiful Mountain Buffalo. www.brightvictoria.com.au

With so much to see and do, the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne is the perfect day trip from the capital to view the changing fall colours. Make a day of it and visit the galleries, cosy tea rooms and boutique shops while you are there or ride the classic steam train, Puffing Billy. www.visitdandenongranges.com.au

4. Southern Highlands, NSW

In the NSW southern highlands, the picturesque towns of Bowral and Mittagong are an easy day trip from Sydney and are ablaze with pretty autumn colours. www.southernhighlands.com.au

5. Tasmania

Tasmania, an isolated island off the southern coast of Australia, is ruggedly beautiful at any time of the year but in Autumn it truly comes alive, putting on a spectacular display of red, orange and golden hues. www.discovertasmania.com.au

6. Daylesford, Victoria

Spa country favourite, Daylesford, in Victoria’s north-west puts on a spectacular display of autumn glory in the fall months. Wander around Lake Daylesford, visit the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens and visit the numerous cafes, boutiques and restaurants and enjoy a cosy lunch by an open fire.

  1. It always seems so odd that our seasons are completely opposite. Thank you for sharing. I will never get to Australia, so I really appreciate your sharing your country!

    • Thanks for your comment, I agree it does seem strange the seasons are so opposite. I love reading all of the blogs on northern hemisphere spring at the moment – even though we are heading towards winter!

  4. Wonderful!

  5. Pretty places and beautiful photos, but you forgot an important one – Canberra! As a city of trees, it’s truly spectacular in autumn. You must put that on your places to visit in autumn.
