Quick and Delicious Tonkatsu Burger Recipe Inspired by Japan

Famous for miso soups and slow cooked broths with all types of delicious noodles and fresh vegetables, pickles, eel, fresh fish, sushi and sashimi, there are many traditional Japanese dishes that have been loved for centuries! Here is a quick ‘inspired by Japan’ Tonkatsu Burger to try at home that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Ingredients (serves 4)

4 brioche buns with sesame seeds

2 pork shoulder/loin steaks ( boneless) cut in half

1 egg

1/2 cup milk

Plain flour for dusting

2 cups of panko bread crumbs

Salt and pepper

Tonkatsu sauce

1/4 cup tomato ketchup

1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

1/8 teaspoon onion powder

2 1/2 tablespoons Worchestershire sauce

Method

  1. To make the Tonkatsu sauce, mix all ingredients together until smooth. Set aside.Whisk egg and milk together and dust pork pieces with plain flour, dip in egg wash and into panko crumbs, press crumbs on to meat well and refrigerate until ready to cook this will let the crumbs set too.
  2. Heat a frypan with some vegetable oil, gently cook the pork steaks until golden brown on both sides and cooked through and rest on paper towel for a few seconds.
  3. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  4. Place pork steak on each brioche bun base and top with slaw and a good amount of the tonkatsu sauce before popping on the lid of the bun. Enjoy!
