Taking Action To Live Better With Disability

When you are living with a disability, it can feel like a lot of daily life, and transitioning into new environments, roles, or situations involves mitigating or working with your disability. While it’s not wrong to expect some degree of help from people like employers and family members in accommodating your needs, it can feel frustrating to feel the limitations get in your way and you might be thinking about what you can do to improve your quality of life and independence. Here are a few ways to do just that.

Ensure your space empowers you

Whatever space you find yourself spending more time in, you should ask if there is more that can be done to foster your own ability to independently act within that space. For instance, for people living with a disability that affects their mobility, then you might want to work with teams like Altius Group to adapt your living environment better to your own needs. If you’re concerned about your workplace, then you can talk to your employer about adapting it to better suit the needs of their employees with disabilities. Many employers are able to make use of state-provided financial and logistical support to better ensure that they do not provide a discriminatory workplace, and broaching the subject could be the sign they need to improve their workplace standards.

Find the areas you can flourish in

While you can make adaptations to make it easier for you to accommodate your needs and live and work more independently, you should also look at the progress that you can make as a person in completing the various tasks that you might want to be able to handle more independently. With the help of occupational therapists like My Therapy Crew, you can expand the limits of your own independence. It’s important to recognize this is not specifically for the sake of finding a place in employment, although that can certainly be an option. Occupational therapists help in all facets of life, helping you better improve your ability to handle your own day-to-day tasks and responsibilities as well.

Make sure that self-care is a priority

A lot of people living with a disability may be able to empathize with the following: the feeling of often working so hard to ensure our independence and our ability to manage our responsibilities that we can often risk burning ourselves out. It can happen to anyone, but sometimes that desire to prove our abilities or to lessen the burden we think we’re placing on our loved ones can see us neglecting ourselves and, as such, you could be making one of the major self-care mistakes. Take the time to really care for yourself, to treat yourself well, and to acknowledge your own needs for comfort and peace.

When living with a disability, it is important to accept certain areas where independence is more of a challenge much of a possibility, but there are still ways to better your quality of life as, hopefully, the examples above have shown.
