If you have ever visited the famous Spanish island of Ibiza it is likely that you have visited the iconic Cafe del Mar, it’s even more likely that you have heard of the chill out music that gained world wide fame throughout the 1990s and is still going strong today.
Ibiza’s original sunset bar, Cafe del Mar or ‘Sea Cafe’ in Spanish was founded in 1980, in Sant Antoni de Portmany in Ibiza. The cafe was designed by the famous architect, Lluis Güell and makes the most of its enviable location, positioned to take advantage of the stunning Mediterranean sunsets.
It’s supremely relaxed vibes, chill out music and famous sunsets soon gained a loyal following with hundreds flocking to the cafe each evening to witness the sun going down. In the late 1980s the cafe began selling cassette tapes of its music to patrons. In the late 1990s the owners of the cafe started the Cafe del Mar music label, fast forward to today and the label has sold over 12 million albums.
Visiting Cafe del Mar to soak up the atmosphere is a must do whether it’s your first time visiting the island or your 100th, nothing beats a delicious cocktail listening to the smooth Balearic beats while watching the sun go down.
Cafe del Mar opens from 4pm to 1am from April through to October, closing in the off season. World famous DJ’s are a weekly feature during the summer and reservations are recommended during the peak summer months of July to August.
