Move over green juice cleanses and LED face masks, Hollywood has a new obsession… mouth taping. Yes, you read that correctly. Mouth taping has taken off as the latest health trend celebrities are swearing by. Just ask Gwyneth Paltrow. The movie star and founder of Goop recently said “This is probably the single best wellness tool I have found recently. Breathing through your nose at night apparently creates alkalinity in the body and promotes the best quality of sleep.”
But before we get too carried away with what the latest Hollywood flavour of the day is, what do the actual health experts say about mouth taping? James Nestor would have to be one of the leading experts when it comes to breathing. His best-selling book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art even got the attention of Joe Rogan. His book delves into how proper breathing techniques, in particular – nose breathing, can have a profound effect on our overall health and well-being. “What people don’t realize is about 25 to 50 percent of the population habitually breathes through their mouths,” he explained to Joe Rogan during an episode on his podcast. “They don’t realize the neurological problems that this causes, the respiratory problems this causes, the problems with snoring, sleep apnea, even metabolic disorders.”
Luke McLeod, one of Australia’s leading Meditation and Mindfulness Teachers, has recently become a raving fan of mouth-taping. ‘It makes perfect sense.’ He says, ‘The yogis have been practicing nose breathing techniques for centuries. Mouth tape allows us to tap into these ancient health habits almost unconsciously.’
As the popularity of nose breathing increases, there have been many brands popping up offering mouth tape products. How does one then find the right type and is there any difference in what is being offered? “I’ve tried a few different types and the one I really like is Respire.’ says Luke, ‘The fabric is soft and smooth when you place it over your mouth and has a bit of a stretch in it, so you can still move your mouth around.”
So whether you’re looking to improve the quality of your sleep or even just curious about exploring a new health trend, nose breathing seems to stack up as one Hollywood’s more reputable health trends.
