Escape: Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand

In the Otago region on New Zealand’s South Island, lies the beautiful Lake Wakatipu. This picturesque lake is New Zealand’s longest and is surrounded by mountains and scenery so beautiful it is hard to believe it is real. The crisp mountain air, crystal clear waters and snow capped mountains provide the perfect playground for lovers of the great outdoors. Queenstown is the most famous town on the lake (another blog post coming soon on the town itself), however scenic Glenorchy and Kingston are also both worth a visit. Exploring this area and the many hikes and walks centred around the lake is a must-do on any trip to New Zealand. For more information visit

  1. Simply stunning!

  2. I spent the autumn and ski season there in 2001, in fact, that’s where I was for 9/11. It is one of my favorite places in the world. Thanks for the memories!!!!! xoxoxoxo

  5. What a treat to see my country photographed so beautifully. I remember vividly the first time I visited Otago and couldn’t believe just how beautiful my country was (I’m a North Islander – enough said!). Gorgeous post. Thank you.

    Stunning shots! 😍

  7. I have heard it said that the Maori used to pass through here on the way to the West Coast to get Greenstone and they would rest and recuperate in the Wakatipu before carrying on. They believed it was too tapu (sacred ) to stay. Just a place to heal.

    • What a lovely story, I can imagine how restorative it must have been by the lake before there much civilisation there. Such a beautiful, peaceful place
