Knowing what to eat to ensure optimum health is not always straightforward. We often hear one diet is amazing for us, but that another reducing calories, and another increases protein, there are so many different rules! Eating healthily should be effortless, but we certainly make things complex. Here are the best ways to ensure that you make healthy eating simple.

1. Prepare Your Meals

Meal prep is an essential tool you need in your arsenal to avoid unhealthy food choices, especially when you’re too busy or tired to make a meal from scratch. This is why a meal delivery service can be a lifesaver when you have those really busy weeks, but if you can prepare what you’re going to have, it ensures that you can stick to healthy eating patterns throughout the week.

2. Don’t Forget to Hydrate

Hydration is vital for overall health, and even just 1% or 2% mild dehydration can be enough to have negative effects on your cognitive abilities. When it comes to drinking water, don’t ever chug it, just sip a little and often, and you can have various types of fluids instead of water, for example, tea and coffee. Hydration is so important, especially for your overall health, but because it can control hunger and prevent overeating, it helps you to stick to healthier eating practices.

3. Prioritise Nutrients

Foods that are rich in essential nutrients like minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and fibre will ensure you’re getting a wide range for optimum health. When people talk about nutrients, there are lots of people who purely focus on fruits and vegetables, but we also need to have adequate protein (and carbohydrates for that matter!). Protein is essential because it makes us feel full, and it can prevent us from losing strength, especially as we get older. There are people who believe that having too much protein is bad, but you need to have the optimum amount, especially if you’re exercising, which is roughly one gram of protein per pound of body weight per day.

4. Start with Small Changes

Diet is a big and overwhelming word for so many of us. You should begin by making small changes to your diet rather than attempting to completely overhaul your dinner plate. It’s all about a gradual process. The 5% rule is very useful here, making sure that you make a change by 5% per week, which means that gradually you make small changes that over time amount to seismic alterations in your diet and lifestyle.

5. Eat Mindfully

We should pay attention to our bodies’ hunger cues. Lots of people eat out of habit, but if you’re not hungry, do you need to eat? You should also practice mindful eating by chewing slowly and enjoying the flavours and textures of the food. Mindful eating can help prevent overeating and promote better digestion, especially if you follow the 80% rule that many people in Asian countries live by.

We should make healthy eating a priority in our lives, but it can be so complex. These practices can ensure that you’re not just eating better, but you’re not overcomplicating things.
